Tired of the house filling with smoke because a pan was left on a burner, I put together this project which turns off the gas to the burners if there is no motion in the kitchen for 10 minutes. Motion is detected by motion sensors in the kitchen through an Elk M1G. The gas valve is controlled by an Insteon inline Linc shown in the second photograph. I tried using a solenoid valve originally but the buzzing from the valve was unacceptable so I substituted a low voltage ball valve which is the blue object in the photo and used a doorbell transformer I had lying around to power it. The yellow manual valve is a bypass to allow the burners to be on regardless of motion should there be a need. It is critical to pressure test the system to make sure there are no leaks and as a second test use a soap solution on the joints to make sure after installation.
