Elk M1 Gold Phone Trouble

I shut off my living room breaker to do some receptical wiring, and the whole time the M1 Keypad is periodically beeping and announcing "Phone Trouble". Flip the breaker back on and the phone trouble goes away.

I have wired the M1 to the house's phone jacks in anticipation of connecting it to my Comcast voice, but there's currently no devices (phones or modem) plugged into the jacks. The phone demarcation box is completely unhooked. The living room branch circuit does not feed the M1 Gold or any attached security equipment. This is what baffles me -- the living room breaker should have absolutely nothing to do with the M1 Gold.

Is it possible the phone wiring is acting as an antenna, picking up stray 120 VAC noise and the M1G is interpreting it as a phone service? Is it a no-no to connect the M1G to phone wiring but not connect the wiring to a phone service?

Can I use M1EXP with M1EZ8MSI and data bus wiring hub?

Hi all,

It has been about 5 years since I last posted here, but I know this is the place to get great help!

I have an M1EZ8 that I have been using for basic perimeter security and interior motion, and I use the M1EZ8MSI serial hub to connect for programming. I have three keypads, but only one currently connected. I want to setup my data bus wiring hub (M1DBH) to connect all the keypads with RJ45 connectors. I'm going on a long vacation at the end of the week, and want to quickly buy a M1EXP so I can monitor my system remotely and send emails from the system to report any trouble.

Can I use these all together? It looks like the M1XEP has to plug into my M1EZ8MSI. So can the M1EZ8MSI plug into the data hub with the keypads, and the data hub will plug into the EZ8?

I read through the docs really fast, but didn't see that it clearly explained how I might get these three components to work with the EZ8.

This is an unmonitored system, so I want to be able to get email alerts if there is trouble, so I can alert a trusted neighbor to check on the house.

Thank you in advance for any help with this!

Best regards

Surface mount an exterior patio light on stucco wall

Hi, not a security question, but I figure someone here may have an idea.

I would like to surface mount a set of exterior lights around the patio in our backyard. There is only one existing junction box in the stucco wall and I was thinking of running conduit from this box to the other locations.

For each new patio light, I will have to surface mount a octagon / rectangular junction box to the stucco wall and daisy chain 1/2 inch EMT conduit to all the lights. The light fixture will attach directly to the junction box, so it will sit off the wall at least 1.5 inches. I don't have the option of tearing into the stucco wall to route electric and to install junction boxes in the wall, so running conduit is my only choice.

Anyone have any ideas for making this look decent? I was thinking of building a wooden box that would attach to the wall and then meet the base of the light fixture. This would at least cover the junction box along with the unsightly gap between the wall and the light fixture. However, this seems like a bigger job than I'm ready to take on right now.

Example of the light that I will be using (looks similar to this)

Any ideas? Help is appreciated! Thanks!

Home DVR recommendation

I'd like to replace my Swann DVR with something a little better. Main feature I'm interested in beyond the basics is compatibility with eKeypad and streaming video support (mjpeg or h264) via a standard protocol like RTSP.

I've searched through a bunch of the ones listed on ekeypad's site for supported ones, but they are starting to run together... Any recommendations? I'd like to capture D1 or better resolution. all my cameras are analog.

Regards,

Daniel

HAI Rooms and UPB addressing

I set up over 90 loads in upstart, SA units. I just wett around the house and assigned them as I installed them over a period of weeks. Now, for months I have not been able to get them to work right through PCA.

The units are set up in PCAccess exactly like I have them in Upstart. The address for each switch matches exactly to a unit number in PCA. I have created all the rooms and assigned the right switches to each room in PCA. Even tried adding the fake controller as the first switch in room. However, PCA is addressing the units incorrectly. IE, Unit 1 is address 1 in room 1, but Unit 2 is address 2 but in room ONE. That's not the way I want it! My addressing in upstart has nothing to do with what ROOM its in. Am I gong to have to go back to every switch and re-address it? I hope not! Is there a way to change "annotation" in PCA under units? That's the part that's mucking everything up!

I will play with taking house code format and changing it to UPB but I think that will limit my polling. The knowledge base is confusing and not clear to me. Are there more clear instructions somewhere? This may have been covered already in the forum but those pesky three letter searches are not so great, lol.

Elk M1 and swimming pool security

Has anyone used an M1 to "monitor" an inground swimming pool?

I was thinking mostly the status of the gate going into the pool (easy) and possibly the surface of the water to sense if someone falls in (harder)

Further, I dont have any easy way to get wiring to my pool area, so are there any reliable outdoor wireless sensors that could accomplish the above?

Thanks in advance.

Elk-73 location?

I want to use an Elk 73 to mount outside on my house wall. It would have some weather protection, but some rain would be able to get to it.

I was thinking that since the speaker cone is mylar, all I would need to do is seal the pop off cover and mount it to the wall using 1/2' spacers so it had some air space between it and the wall.

Would this work ok or is it a strictly an interior speaker?

Insteon switch to control dimmers?

Here's my situation: For a home theater set-up, I have three banks of lights controlled by Insteon dimmers. My plan is to control scenes with a Logitech or other universal remote. But, also, I want to be able to turn off all three banks with a single switch (well, actually, two three-way switches). I set it up using normal three-way switches that send the load to the dimmers, but there's about a three-second delay between flipping the switch and the lights coming on.

I was wondering if I used Insteon switches, if they would turn the dimmers on and off without the delay.

Does anyone know?

Help with outside speakers

I've got 6 speakers mounted in the ceiling of my back porch. The ceiling material is concrete board and creates lots of reverb/feedback. The speakers mount with a screw/clamp style lock. I was thinking about cutting out some MDF in a 2" wide ring around the speaker to provide a more secure mount and also provide more support to the board. Other suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
