Long story, but I'm consulting on a project and have to decide where to put 3D TV's and where to put non-3D TV's in a large vacation property that includes theater, guest suites, etc.

3D TV has been out for a while - and I'm sure it's been improving.  Problem is, I don't see in 3D - whatsoever - nothing/nada.  Any attempts is REALLY annoying - so I can't even gauge how good things are today or what's happened in the market.

So - being such a technology oriented group I figured this was a good place to take a poll... Do you watch much in 3D, and do you care?  What about for gaming - are 3D TV's effective for that?  If you do watch movies/TV in 3D, how often?  I'd really love some opinions here since this is one place I'll just never be able to form my own.

Gaming suffers from anything that distracts from the tasks at hand.  Wearing those gawd-awful glasses being one distraction not worth suffering.  If anything, things like headphones and a carefully crafted soundtrack (actual direction-oriented sound effects) have MUCH more impact that anything pretending to be popping out on the screen.

For movies, meh, what's the point?  Again, the glasses suck.  Even in a movie theatre they're annoying.

Which reminds me, I should probably see about whether I can remove the batteries from the glasses for our Panasonic VT60...  no sense having them corrode and ruin them while they're stuffed in a box on the shelves...

When I bought a Samsung smart TV in 2010 it was very hard to find a TV that did not come with 3D built in. I had no interest in it and have never used it. If you can get a good 1080p recording it looks darn near 3d to me.

Mike.

I've never had interest in 3D, mainly because of the glasses. Sure, it's fine when you have 4 sets of glasses and 4 people watching TV, but when person #5 shows up... ugh, well...  and I'm not going to keep 15+ sets available for the Super Bowl party, etc.

If it's built into my next TV, sure, I'll have the capability, but I have no real intention of using it on any sort of regular basis. TV is a 2D platform, if I want to experience something 3D... I'll do it myself in the game called life.

I've never had a set with 3D, but I've also always considered it a gimmick.  I don't know anyone that watches 3D regularly.

Interesting that you can't see the 3d.  I haven't run into many others with that (that I know of) but I have a similar issue.  I generally have decent vision (not great but correctable to 20/20) but have an issue where my eyes don't work together for depth perception.  Didn't even know I had the issue until I started some private pilot training in my off time.  Since I was in the military at the time and needed a flight physical I ended up at the same doctors as the fighter pilots.  Caused a bit of a stir when I couldn't pass the depth perception test but eventually they figured out I wasn't a fighter pilot and only needed a 3rd class medical - depth perception not required.  Did ok with training and got my private pilots license without any problem.  :)  So it really hasn't limited me much if at all.  Might explain why I wasn't real good at sports in high school though...

Anyway, put me down as not at all interested.

And here I thought I was all alone in the no camp!
It's ok for a movie here and there in the theater with the kids, but not at home. I never understood it especially if you like to fall asleep in bed with a movie on

I pretty much only watch it on special occasions when I might have people over. I too think it is gimmicky, but do look forward to the day when you can buy a system at a decent price that does not require glasses.

I really enjoy 3D movies at the theater (maybe 4 in the last couple years?), but never watched one at home.

Kinda what I was suspecting.  I've never seen a person wear the 3D glasses.  They're kinda popular at the Disney resorts in some of the games which of course feel totally weird for me.

Another problem with the glasses... is for those who wear glasses - it's either uncomfortable or impossible to wear both at the same time.

Dumb analogy here....no different really then paying for the premium of HD programming on the typical broad band provider helping pave the way to update their "stuff" to HD.

One of the issues in the conversion to HD and relating to updating broadcast providers was that they were not going to pay for it unless they got something in return as it was a costly endeavor.

The standards relating to the mfg of LCD TV's having better resolution really didn't justify an increase in costs; but the embedded "smart TV", 3D stuff (that took advantage of the better resolutions) really did create a sort of premium price for the television; providing bells and whistles and selling those features like they were necessary to watch TV.  ..

So I'm on location right now - and watched a movie tonight on the 190" screen - no 3D glasses - but it almost has that 3D effect anyway or at least as much as I know of it.  Tomorrow I'll see if I can find an actual 3D movie and try out the special glasses just to see what it's like - they're RF because of the projector - JVC 4K projector.  I have to say, with the upscaling - the picture was quite amazing.  There were a few checklist items though for me to deal with.

if you get the right 3D Tech it's actually not bad. You must get active 3D glasses and have the hardware to support it. I have had my Sharp Pro for 2yrs now. I own 20+ 3d movies as a result. The wife and kids love it, just not all of the time, and it has to be the right movie. But I suspect I am in the extreme minority.

If I were doing A/V for a vacation home, I would insist on it.
Let us know how you make out with the RF glasses.
