Insteon light switch module

Hi all, newbie here!
Just needed a question answered by all you experts!
I'm about to automate my living room (d.i.y).
Going down the insteon route, so my question is...
With a living room with a light either end controlled by a double switch,
Would I have to have 2 separate switches to fit the module at rear or is
there a double loaded module available?
Eagerly awaiting your replies...
Thanx in advance

First, I am not sure I understand your question. but...
I am assuming you have two lights in parallel on a three-way switch system..

You could install two Insteon SwitchLinc (dimmers if desired). One at each end replacing the 3way switches.
With linking between the units via internal scene links in each switchlinc or a HA unit (external) scene you can make them both control the lights. Insteon units all contain internal scenes (256?) that can be linked to each other without external equipment.

Only one unit would be wired to the lights, the other would just send remote commands and could also be a keypad only etc... The standard SwitcLinc dimmer are cheaper usually. When you set up your linking whatever the setting on the "responder" switch is what it will return to when operated in service. ie. dim level and ramp speed. There will be no up/down switch combination "XOR" logic, just normal 2way "OR" control from either end. Either UP tap will turn lights on and either DOWN tap will turn lights off.

In my laundry/mudroom  I only used one SwitchLinc Dimmer and a motion sensor and left the other 3way switch as a dummy. No hands needed and cheaper.

SwitchLincs can send six commands to  an HA box like ISY994i, on, off, fast on, fast off, brighten, and dim. I use one SwitchLinc Dimmer to control 7 lights on 5 Insteon modules. I have two different lighting scenes controlled from my ISY that toggle from a single On command from that same switch.

Yeah it's very hard to understand exactly what you are asking.  The term double-switch is throwing us off...

Some terminology:

3-Way - Two switches in different boxes which control the same light
Single Gang Box 3"x5" - A box that normally contains only one switch (but can have two).
Dual Gang Box - 6"x5" A box that normally contains two switches

So given those terms can you describe exactly what you have, how many boxes, types, locations and switches in each?

If you currently have two switches in a single gang like this http://www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-15-Amp-Combination-Double-Switch-White-R62-05224-2WS/202027008

There is not a single Insteon module which will handle that. One solution would be replace the single gang box with a double gang box, then put in two switchlincs. Another solution would be to put in a KeypadLinc, with one of the lights as the load. Then put in a Micro Module or InLineLinc to control the other light. Then link the KeypadLinc to control that other device. You probably won't have room in the box for both a KPL and Micro Module, but might be able to mount the Micro Module / InLineLinc at the fixture.

Or, maybe you don't actually care about controlling the two lights independently, especially if you are adding dimming capability, and then you could just wire them both to a single switchlinc.

It's one switch plate with 2 switches on it, using kinect to switch on by voice recognition. So stil my question is will one module control (insteon) both lights e.g 1. "Switch on living room light 1" ..."switch on living room light 2"

No there is no single gang insteon switch that can control two loads.    If you put an inline module in the back of the box with a switch in front you would likely exceed the box fill requirements.

You could:
  • Wire both loads to one switch (controlling them together)
  • Do what jdale says and put the inline module at the fixture and control with a keypadlinc
  • Remove the single gang and install a dual gang. It is not that hard to do if you have the space.  You can pry the old box out and insert a dual gang retrofit box and put in two switches.  If done carefully there is no wall repair needed.

Insteon has self-contained Insteon dual-band modules built into 8W and 17W?? LED bulbs in warm white. Screw them in and leave the switches on. Done.

Alternatively put a single SwitchLinc in and bypass the other with an Insteon bulb in the socket. Link the bulb to the SwitchLinc in a scene. If you have a controller such as ISY you can take the 6 different codes the SwitchLinc dimmer can put out and control the bulb via some ingenuity from the same switch. A I stated above I can control 5 banks of lights from one switch.

Thanx LarryILix.... So what you are saying is With these bulbs, I don't need a module at all, just leave the switch in an on position and I can control them remotely...cool!

Yes the Insteon control electronics are built into the bulbs and only need constant power to be controlled.
