Its been now over a couple of weeks of testing the modded TP-Link OpenWRT upgraded micro router network connection to the NIC on the OPII.  It seems to be working fine.  No hiccups yet.

There is hardly any space on the device for doing much.  That said I am communicating with the panel now via the serial link and it works fine.  Playing a bit now with Lua for a tiny little program to run on the microrouter which can do the time sync and or do email status stuff.  Looking at a very basic HTML Lua / LUCi HAI page here.

This would be a little hack / mod that would provide a fix to the promiscuous NIC issue, wired or wireless access via the network to the OPII and an out of band connection via a 3G or 4G modem connection.

Basic connectivity would be just one serial (via USB), one network connection into micro router and out of micro router.  I can do this too with a network connection.  Probably will test the two to see which one is faster.

Microrouter cost is around $20.  Time involved in modification is maybe 15 minutes plus the update of new firmware.

The draw on the micro router is mW's and it shouldn't be an issue to connect it to the 12VDC supply on the OPII panel.  That is my next piece of said endeavor.

Another hardware piece is to utilize a smaller USB to RS232 cable.  Might be just a tap into the motherboard of the microrouter with a TTL to RS-232 set up.  Not sure yet.
