Altronix AL400ULX power supply housing

Can anyone tell me if it is within electrical code to install a AL400ULX power supply in the same box as the Elk control? The Altronix power supply has 115vac input and I'm not sure if that's ok in the same box as the low voltage components.

Not an all inclusive answer but if you ground the enclosure and maintain seperation of circuits you probably can. Also keep in mind heat etc as the Elk enclosure does not have much ventilation.

Good thought on the ventilation. I would be better to leave the power supply in it's own box and surface mount it.

Depends on the creative interpretation of the code. Separation and the like would apply, however the installation of an electrical enclosure within an enclosure would usually be a faux pax. No different, barring some voltage and separation, than installing a breaker enclosure within another existing enclosure.

Best option is to have the unit be it's own entity.

I wasn't thinking of putting an enclosure inside an enclosure. I was considering putting the altronix bare board in the Elk box. I have an AC outlet installed in the bottom og the Elk box and could easily power the altronix with a very short line from teh outlet box to the board.

I may just install the altronix board in it's own metal box just below the Elk box but it will be at waist height. Are there any problems with mounting a power supply at waist height other than the obvious inconvenience of bending down to work on it. I know that ac outlets need to be a minimum distance from the floor, do power enclosures? This is not in my basement where it might get wet in a flood, it is at the top of the basement staircase on the landing.

Would not be compliant to put the altronix in the Elk enclosure unless you can absolutely maintain separation with a permanent divider to keep the class 2 wiring away from class 1, then you have to consider if the enclosure would maintain it's UL rating or not (if your insurer is up and onto these things).  The AC outlet in the bottom of the enclosure is a different entity altogether.

I would keep it separate for many reasons, but not limited to the code items that must and should be considered.

If you have  a branch circuit feeding the M1, it's just as easy to use a piece of MC or BX cable to install a whip from the duplex to the Altronix and be compliant and essentially done.
