Recommended motion detectors / PIR

Hi,

Seems there are many different types (IR, microwave etc.) and different prices. Looking for a good value but reliable motion detector that just has a simple trigger output, for use as room occupancy detectors.

Anyone looked into / evaluated motion detectors and can recommend any?

Thanks.

For security based motion I've had good experience with the Honeywell Aurora PIR, but not sure I'd use the same one for occupancy detection...

I am very happy with the Leviton occupancy sensor.

I installed one in my garage to control lighting when I walk into the garage or when the overhead door opens. The unit has built-in logic that is different than a simple security motion detector that switches on and off whenever anything moves. For instance it can be programmed to detect daylight and keeps the lights on for a predetermined amount of time after the motion ends. It is pretty smart and very configurable.

EDIT

it also has low voltage switching so that any load connected to it can be manually overidden by a doorbell switch or your security/automation control.

Here utilize wall and ceiling mounted PIRs.

The ceiling mounted PIRs are more used for occupancy (although it is not an occupancy sensor).

The brand I utilize are Rokonet and they look like this.  I have not had any issues with them over the years.

Wall mounted PIRs are cheapie DSCs.

Pete, are the Rokonet PIRs mentioned above wired directly to the lights?

My issue has always been finding occupancy sensors that can be LV powered and dry contact to be tied directly into an Elk or HAI panel. In my case, I don't necessarily want to use the occupancy sensors for lighting, but potentially for other things as well...

I believe I have seen some recommended over the years but haven't taken the jump to get and try and of them.

No these are standard PIR's. (all LV)  I used them for auto turning on the HAI lighting.

Passive infrared motion detectors detect intruders efficiently. First decide whats ecurity features are most important to you, are you concerned for protection while you are away, vulnerable areas, what you expect from a security service provider?
