Upgrading PC5010 to PC1832 good idea? Which DLS software?

My Power832 system is 10 years old. It's version 2.02 I think. I have a newer PC1832 4.6 as a backup in case the 5010 dies which it did 10 years ago.

I'm about to add a PC5100 and a PC5204. Would it be better to upgrade the PC5010 now? Are there major new features or improvements of the current system?

I have my current system backed up with DLS2002. It's got strange quirks though. For instance, I have an IT100 which occupies slot 8 but in order for DLS2002 to communicate with an LCD5500Z keypad, it also has to be on slot 8 which means any time I want to make changes to the keypads with DLS2002, I have to remove the IT100, change one of the LCD5500Z keypads to slot 8, then do 902/903. Then I have to do it all in reverse when I want to put the IT100 back on. Pain the but. Does DLS5 and the PC1832 fix all of that?

I also have DLS5 installed but haven't used it yet.

Is there a way to download the 5010 settings to the 1832 or should I just count on manually populating the system through DLS5? I'd like to have it all ready to go so that when I swap the board, I can use DLS upload to program it.

Different panels and series. You can't migrate an existing panel's DB to a new panel. If you're intending on changing the panel, now would be the time to do it.

Keep in mind the older DLS is SQL express and the new is SQLite, so you may experience issues viewing the old DB in the new program unless you upload it and subsequently view.

Are you saying it's possible to migrate the old database to the new one? I didn't realize that was possible. Is there a conversion utility?

I figured I'd just need to create a new customer in DL5 and create a new one from scratch which isn't that big of a deal. Will probably take at most an hour. It seems most of the programming and sections are the same between the two panels.

No.

What you have in DLS already isn't able to be migrated unless you want to attempt to dig through SQL and build your own tables to do that.

You would need to suck the program out of the existing 5010 and then mirror the settings manually on the new panel DB.

The release notes say the upgrading the DLS uninstalls the core program (C+ based I believe) and leaves the existing SQL express install and instance and then installs the new DLS and the SQLite program.

Different animal.

Thanks. That's what I figured.

However, I do have DLS2002 and DLS5 installed on the same system and both are working fine. DLS5 is not an upgrade over DLS2002.

Discovered I was reading a DLS4-DLS5 doc. Either way, they're still different beasts and DB's

There is the ability to migrate compatible panel DB's but not in your specific case.

Not a biggie. Thanks for your answers. I'll report back on how it went when I've done the upgrade.

I found some time last night to pull out the new board to bench test it. I hooked it up to it's AC adapter, backup battery, and used one of my 4 LCD5500Zs from my existing system to provide a keypad interface. Connected fine with DLS5. I'll program the board this weekend and then just swap it out with the old PC5010 so I shouldn't have more than about 15 minutes of downtime.
