99Alarm

Anyone ever hear of this monitoring company "99Alarm"?  http://99alarm.com

So I get an email about them out-of-the-blue.  They are offering UL monitoring of any type (Internet, cellular, phone, VoIP) for $9.99 a month.  Couldn't find any record of them at the BBB.

So I encode my email address in such a way, that I can tell where my email address came from. As it happens, this company got my email address from NextAlarm. They gave or sold my email address to this company.  I am no longer a NextAlarm customer, as I disconnected them about 3 months ago.

So you have to wonder is this company is somehow related to NextAlarm?

I am a nextalarm customer and got the unsolicited email also today.

Thought the same and did some whois searching and this guy is based in Kirkland Washington (Redmond) and has a large number of alarm monitoring domains registered to him.
"upgrademyalarm.com"  "cancelmyalarm.com", etc.
Doesn't look affiliated to Nextalarm.

Dunno, but my BS detector is in the warning zone on this one.

I just found this forum, as I just got the 99alarm email earlier today as well.  I am also a NextAlarm customer. It makes me wonder if their customer database got compromised in some way.
With that said, also in my searches I found this post (on a site I don't know anything about) saying that 99alarm is a scam - and they operate under many names - I assume that is why there are many domain registrations to this same person that davestr found.

I guess the fact that companies like NextAlarm are either selling their customer emails to scammers like these or that they are being hacked, makes me upset either way.  I am 100% sure this email address came from NextAlarm one way or another.

Just last week, I started getting hourly SPAM messages from a variety of companies all coming to an email I used for GoDaddy.com   Several years back I bought a security certificate from them, and again, they were the only possible source where this email address originated.  I called them up to complain, but of course their customer service people don't have any script for "customer email address given to spammers."

I will not do business with any company who does this. I cancelled my service with NextAlarm two months ago and I'm happy I did.

BBB doesn't mean a thing other than the company seeking listing paid fees towards them and is not a guarantee or warranty of performance. I would tread very lightly if that were the measure of what I consider a good business.

Keep in mind, NA is just a clearinghouse for monitoring services themselves. They don't own or operate any CS and shop their services to the commercial marketplace for a CS to monitoring. There's a lot of other dirty little secrets they have, but that's another discussion.

YMMV
