front/back porch lights to come on sunset to sunrise.

Just thinking i got in over my head with this all i got all kinds of theater stuff i would like to add in later but would like to just get the basics first and make sure its functioning before adding additional

also how do i get the system to speak to which zone/unit is open closed etc ie front door opens to hear front door open. in about 4200 sf home

You'll be fine. Just one step at a time.  So the first task is connecting PC Access to the panel.  Yo can do it with a serial connection, but its easier with a network connection.  So are you that far?  You will need the IP address of the panel and the security stamp which you can get from a console keypad. Once you get that far, it's easy to get going, but connecting is tricky.  Also, do you have the client PC Access or the dealer version?  The dealer software lets you do a bit more but either will work.

got PC access going was able to get the ip  and security stamp in place. i think i have the Dealer PC access

Once you are connected, you can do everything from PC Access.  I would start bu defining switches, thermostats, etc. Name them also. You should be able to control everything from PC Access.  What kind of light switches do you have?  If you have Leviton UPB switches, you can even program them from PC Access.  Do that before you work on programming.

thanks yes i have leviton lights. sorry for the delay been trying to get these things defined in PC access

If you have Leviton lights, you have a choice to make, UPB or HLC.  I personally like HLC, but its up to you.  HLC is a structured form of UPB.  Each room in the house (or virtual rooms) has up to 7 switches and a room controller. You also can add home controllers where you want. The idea behind it is this. Each room has 4 scenes plus all on and all off.  I typically use "Normal," "Party," and something brighter than normal, and something dimmer than normal, but you can change these anytime.  When you want, you press the room scene button and all the lights in the room adjust to that scene. You almost never touch the individual light switches. The OP2 automatically tracks the scenes and keeps it all in sync.

If you go with UPB, then you have a blank slate.  It gives you more flexibility but its also much more work.  If you are willing to add some room controllers, HLC is a nice way to go.

But don't feel locked-in. You can always switch from one to the other, but you may want to think about it sooner rather than later.  If you DO go with HLC, you need to enter your rooms in PC Access by room.  Even if you DON'T go HLC, it doesn't hurt to enter switches by room.

feeling good about this got the rooms all setup room 1 was setup as the room name and then room 2 was the can lights just as you mentioned here. working on doing the scenes now that you have mentioned and will work on door locks as well. I did decide to go the HLC route
