Video camera setup

I am installing a couple of Foscam R2 HD 1080p cameras and have a question for the group.

I have the viewing software set with the http and rtsp ports both set to the http port and I can view the cameras fine both on the LAN and from the WAN.  Is this the correct way to set the ports? Should the rstp use a different port?

I'm new to video camera technology and have been reading but couldn't find a convincing answer to this Q. I HAVE seen that the standard rtsp port for HD cams is 554 but I am able to view the cams while setting the viewing software to rtsp=http port. What is correct here?

Mike.

EDIT - Also will it improve performance if I set the viewing software to reference rtsp=554 and forward that port to the camera in the firewall in addition to the http port?
