DirectTV Now

I'm thinking of going with DirectTV Now, which starts at $35 per month to replace my DishTV setup ($160 plus per month).

The only thing I'm wondering is how to replace the Hopper (DishTV's DVR Hardware) so I have recording capabilities (especially after THIS post).

Has anyone tackled this?

Googled it and found that you can record stuff from Directv Now using the Windows software PlayOnTV.

I used to use PlayOnTV a few years back and it worked fine.

Also see a mention of using Roku with Directv Now.

Newest television here has Roku built in and it's been working fine.

Both of the above record to the cloud.

Starting to see the ability to record live streams with KODI.  Functions are there but I have not tested them yet.

I use PlayOn to record HBO Now, Amazon and Netflix movies/shows that are being dropped that I want to keep, works well.  Can confirm ability to playback through Roku.  PlayOn acts like a VCR, records the stream in real time.

They have "lifetime license" sales all the time, usually about $39.

Can PlayOn TV schedule programs to record and change the Roku "channel" to record it?  I would love to use of these streaming services, but it has to be able to record 5 or 6 multiple programs at once, and have all the local channels.  I haven't found one yet that does.  At least if they don't have DVR and they allow streaming after-the-fact, I do not know why they don't allow a simple way to add bookmarks, so it seems you are "recording" a show even if you are only streaming it at a later time. The storage requirements for them would really be minimal for that kind of a feature. My wife has to be able to "record" multiple shows at once, or she wont allow a change.

PlayOn is a Roku channel on a Roku or standalone via web interface or via the PlayOn App. In the PlayOn interface you select what you want to record, you can select multiples, for any given service they will stream one at a time.  I cannot speak to whether it will record 2 streams at a time for different services, I suspect not, I have not done any time specific scheduled recordings as we have never had the need.

Another option, if you aren’t married to the idea of Directv Now, is to try PlayStation Vue, Sling, or Hulu which all have DVR capability built in. I’ve tried all of them but have been using PSVue for about 6 months now. I coupled that with a Tablo for watching and recording locals and have been saving around $150/month over my old DTV subscription. I liked DTVNow, but their lack of a cloud DVR killed WAF for me.

BSR - do you get OK streaming performance with your current ISP?  That'd be the biggest concern first...

Also for those on other ISPs, one thing to consider is if your ISP has any data limits.  I'm on Comcast now, and during my cord-cutting experiment, I was getting hit every month for $20-$50 in overages due to excessive data consumption.  That killed the experiment for me and I went back to DirecTV with the dish.  That said, I have a larger-than-average family and people home all the time, so we're a worst case scenario... just something to keep in mind.

Good call out Work2Play.  We're on Spectrum Ultra 300/20 (averaging 350/23) with no data caps and no issues.
