Caddx expansion /replacement?

I have a Caddx system currently with POTs monitoring.  Adding a detached garage about 200 ft from the house that I want to monitor and also considering dropping the POTs line and going to cell monitoring.  Monitoring is with AlarmRelay.

Wondering what my options are.   I think I can get an expansion module for the garage and something to allow cell hookup but perhaps it makes sense to replace the system with something newer?  No issues with the current system and it does everything we want.  Don't want to replace the cables to the keypads but think what is there should support most equipment.  Not sure if distance to garage is long enough to be an issue.

The Caddx (now NetworX owned by Interlogix) is a decent system and is still being sold.  If it does what you need, I would stick with it.

One thing to note is that the parent company, UTC, announced several months ago that they will be shutting down the business by the end of this year. So although you will be able to buy parts from distributors' stock for some time to come, long term parts availability may be an issue.

Got a link to the announcement?

Any suggestions on other systems? Cell communication add on for the existing system?

Here's the Interlogix announcement:

If you want to switch to a different system, I would probably go with a Honeywell Vista.  The 15P or 20P are good starting points to consider. There is also a 20iP, which has a built in internet interface for CS monitoring.

If you have GE wireless sensors today, you will have to change them over to Honeywell versions, or get a GE-to-Honeywell translator.

For a cell communicator, you can choose from a number of vendors, such as Uplink that attach to the phone line dialer outputs.  I would talk to your monitoring company and see what they recommend.

Will likely stick with this and just add an expander.  Run is about 280 feet.  22/4 looks acceptable but wondering about that with a keypad off the remote location.  Also would like to put a sounder (siren or similar) in the garage since it is a bit of a distance from the house.  Not clear how I would do that.  And what about an enclosure?  I am guessing this fits in a standard enclosure.

It fits in the standard enclosure.  You might need to also get the 8/16 zone expansion module to connect to the expander.  You could also just connect the 8/16 zone module to the cable run from the panel as well.  The distance limitations would be the same.  Since you want to connect a keypad as well, the expander should be used as well though.

Now I am more confused...  I was looking at the NX216E expander.  It has 8 inputs but is called a 16 zone expander.  Think this is with zone doubling as on the main panel.  I see it doesn't have it's own power input so much get power from the main panel.  What expansion module and expander are you thinking of?

No, the NX216E has 16 physical zones which is what the 16 means in 216E.  You do not connect a keypad to the 216E, it just adds 16 physical zones.  If you have an NX-8E it has 8 physical zone inputs, not 4.  Zone doubling would allow the 8 physical to become 16.

There is the NX-320E that is a bus extender and has power output.

Product overview The NX-320E is a microprocessor-controlled remote power supply module for the NetworX control panels. The module has three programmable outputs (A, B, C) and one programmable style Y bell output. You can add up to eight power supply modules for a total of 32 outputs. You can use the A, B, and C programmable outputs as auxiliary power, for smoke detectors and sirens. (See Specifications on page 19.) Each power supply module has a tamper terminal that can be used to supervise the metal enclosure. Do not use more than 2500 ft. of wire from the NX-320E to all outgoing devices.

One of the power outputs could be used to provide power to a keypad and/or the NX216E.

What I need is a keypad in the garage so I can disarm from there.  Could even make the garage separate from the house as far as arming and such.  Think the word used is separate "partition". Need about 6 zones including one for smoke alarms and a local siren.

So I am just getting back to this.  It looks like I need a NX320E, NX216E, NX148E keypad.  Also assume I need a 24VAC transformer.  Whats the PN for the enclosure?  Or is there a package I could get that includes several of the parts I need cheaper?  Do I need a battery in this can for backup?

The enclosure is an NX-003.  Check eBay as they will be cheaper to find an enclosure; some are new.

The NX-320E comes with a transformer.  The NX series are usually 16.5VAC and not 24VAC though.  I just got mine the other day.  I do wish they made the board longer, so you could install it in the enclosure like the alarm panels gets installed instead of an add-on module.  Most of these boards get installed in an enclosure and not in the main enclosure.

The NX-216E will add 16 more zones to the setup.

Yes, the NX-320E has leads for a battery.  No battery means if the power goes out, the NX-320E is still powered, but nothing connected to it will be; like the NX-216E or a keypad.  The NX-320E basically creates a second data bus; however what happens on one is sent onto the other.  So the NX-320E is basically a bridge between the two data buses.  In order to communicate correctly with the alarm panel, it needs to be powered from the panel so there is no differential between them.  There could be a differential between the primary and secondary data bus, but the NX-320E compensates for that.  This is why it has its own power.  The transformer included in the NX-320E is not a wall wart type, it gets hardwired in.  You could probably mount it in the enclosure.  That is what I'm planning on doing.

There is a discussion I created about the NX-320E and the best that I could come up with RAL is that you use one of the outputs to feed say a keypad.  You have two outputs which allows for 2 Amps.  You might search for that discussion when it comes times to wire it up.

Thanks for the replies and details.

Mike,  Sounds like we could make a deal - I had missed that.  I am not familiar with all the parts you listed so give me a few days to look things up and I will send you a PM.
