Yes what you were told is true. All you need is one "master Muti Switch" to control up to 8 different locations. They dont have to be in the same room or near each other. UPB works by sending a signal from sensor A to find switch B or G or Q or whatever and toggles that switch on and off. (Or it can dim) But keep in mind you cant turn the light on from the doorway if you dont have a switch next to the door way. That is why 3 way switches are so common.
