Leviton 21" Structred Media Cabinet - how to connect

I thought their stuff had a lifetime warranty?    I've bought a ton of their better stuff - prosafe line mainly (metal cases); not the cheap plastic stuff - and never had a failure (probably bought 35 GS110TP's in the last year).  Linksys on the other hand...  I refuse to touch it.   For those...

    Self Monitor Installation ADT A910KR

That looks like a traditional magnet-type sensor.  It's sticking out a lot though so there may have been gap/distance issues.  Personally I'd normally leave the sensor flush with the frame and do whatever is necessary to push the magnet closer.

    Enrollment question regarding ElkRP

Yeah you can do it through RP but you have to add the first one right after you add the zone controller, while RP still sees it as a wireless expander, otherwise the option won't be there.

What is the reason behind the growth of Home Automation System Market?

To me, the proliferation of all these one-off apps and new attempts at new ecosystems are what've caused my interest in home automation to wane.  It's just not as cool to say you're lights are automated when you show someone and they say "yeah, I can do that with alarm.com or Hue".  It just...

    Battery Backup Ran Out

I like the jump-start pack with integrated inverter... that seems like a great option.  Even if you just connect the 12V jump start leads to the battery it'd recharge it too so the elk would be back in business for another day or so.  You do have to short a terminal to force the elk to power...

    Retrofitting an old estate

For the t-stat, I definitely prefer something hard-wired which only AprilAire, RCS or HAI OmniStat will do.  For anything else, plan to skip any integration with the Elk and run a separate app.  You can do the z-wave ones but I don't think they're any smarter and they open up integration...

    Self Monitor Installation ADT A910KR

In self monitoring, you have to remember that you're the weakest link.  At that point the alarm system won't provide any safety benefit or reliably alert authorities; it'll just tell you something has gone wrong.  If you're on a cruise ship, airplane, in a meeting or driving through the woods...

    Enrollment question regarding ElkRP

Hi RogueOne,   The issue with the wireless zone expanders reverting to wired is a bug I came across 5+ years ago and it seems to still pop up every so often on brand new installs.  It's been a while, but as I remember it, if you add the zone expanders in RP and DON'T add any transmitters to it...

Replacing a pre-wired Honeywell with an Elk

Welcome OP!  Seems like you've done your homework, and have a pretty good grasp of what's going on here.  I'll just add a couple points...   Many DIY'ers like to have their I/O cards flat on plates, but the glides to work just fine and take up way less space.  Do you know just how much you plan...

    Medicine Cabinet

Me too - or some super-secure way to lock it down.   I like the idea of the 2x6 wall with power - I hate having power cords in the bathroom!   We use them - guest BR is bandaids and the like; kids BR is drinking cups, extra toothpaste, and floss.  Even ours are deodorant, lotions, shave creams...

I was just going to add that comment... isn't that the generally accepted standard?

    CAT 6 Crimper Recommendations

Quality tools are important.  I truly don't understand the "harbor freight" mentality - the whole "I only need it for one use".  I take the approach of "I'm only buying this once, and I expect it to outlive me".  Quality tools make for better workmanship and a better final product, along with...

Cat5e outdoor run for security Camera

If your run isn't level, expect that over time, the gel will flow as liquids do and pool at one end.  That can make quite the mess!  I've seen worst-case scenarios where they're used on vertical runs such as towers, and it results in catastrophic failure as the cabinet fills with gel.  Plus it's...

    Self flushing toilet

This is a hilarious problem to have!  I'm with the others though - I'd try really hard just to detect his presence, then lack of it for X amount of time - then flush.  Even if his remnants stay in the bowl for an hour, I have to think that once he goes, he's done for a while.   That said, if you...

Cat5e outdoor run for security Camera

Between buildings, yeah - if you can run conduit, it's preferred.  For all intents and purposes, that doesn't change the classification of the wire needed.  Be careful of the outdoor CatX wire - many are gel filled which has its purpose but for most DIYers and homeowners, it's not the best...

    Interesting uses of home automation

IVB - been there... took the break then eased back in, then went in too far... I'm about 80% out now and looking forward to a few months to recharge again before refocusing.  It's been the best experience though and through these breaks I've been able to refocus and come out so much further...

Frontier Sued For Misuse of Federal Broadband Funds

I've done quite a bit of work with all the carriers in the US, Canada, and a little in Costa Rica (government run)...  Frontier has literally always been at the bottom of my list as the worst carrier around.  Where Verizon literally wastes money buying the best there is then buying the next...

lol!   I just came from another conference tonight with another tile and a samsung tab...  maybe I'll do something more interesting with the tile this time.
