    Cat5 cable power drop?

I'm also looking at running power over Cat5. I have one of those Cheaper RFID Receivers that I need to mount in my garage. It uses serial, but I found out that I can get 2 RS485 adapters (one for each end) to extend the cable to the length I need (~100ft). I used the calculator, and it came...

Getting Started with Programming an RS232

I got my RFID stuff mentioned in this thread, and it's working great, at least with the sample code. I found the .ocx has the controls I need, but have no clue how to use it. Does anyone know of any sample code/websites/books that will explain more how to use Active X and Visual Basic (I...

    Constantly transmitted X10 Signal

Yes, that happens to me quite of then. That's why people use a V572 or a W800 to handle the wireless X-10 stuff. It's supposed to prevent that from happening.

    Wireless Contact System

I decided to take the plunge and get some RFID gear that was suggested earlier. Now I just have to figure out how to write a program to interface it with HAL....As for the Quik Bridge Receiver, I'll probably get one of those too. It'd be good for monitoring if a car is on or off, and also...

Getting Started with Programming an RS232

Hmm, HAL has this thing called HALi which is "an Actixe X interface that allow more advanced programming with HAL." Can I use any language with Active X? Which one would be the most useful to learn?

    HOME AUTOMATION BEGINNER

HAL is also very good. A while back I heard the Voice Recgonition in it was better that Homseer's, but I'm not sure how it is now. It's also very user friendly. The only downside is that there aren't quite as many plugins for it. http://automatedliving.com/default.htm

Getting Started with Programming an RS232

Hey All, I was looking at some of the cheaper RFID things and they seem like they will work well for my application. However, I am using HAL and not Homseer, so there is no plugin for the reader. From what I've read, the reader simply sends data about the tag to the serial port, but there is...

    Wireless Contact System

I think that will be the way for me to go. If I already had Homeseer, I would probably go the RF route. This summer I plan to upgrade the HA software, so I will be looking more at HAL vs. Homseer then. One more question: how far of a range do you think you get?

    Wireless Contact System

I am thinking of what my next HA Software upgrade will be. I am currently running HAL Deluxe, and while its working fine, I can't help but feel pulled a bit to Homeseer. I also couldn't help notice it's $30 more to upgrade to HAL 2000 than it is to purchase a new copy of Homseer. I already...

    Wireless Contact System

Ano, That seems like it should do exactly what I am looking for. After reading through the manual, from what I gather is that you can have 8 different outputs. I beleive these should be able to interface with the SECU-16i I have right? Here's the sensor I am looking at getting. It says it...

    Wireless Contact System

I was looking at the smart car sensor here: http://james.lipsit.com/smart_car_sensor.htm In the description, he says that you need a transmitter and sensor for each car. This comes out to be about $80/car, which I can't really afford. I also saw the tutorials here for building an X-10...

    Animated Christmas Lights

Nah, I'm not sick of them (yet). :o The funny thing is give me a second or two to look at the lights and I can figure what what song it is doing and where it is in the song. ;)

    Animated Christmas Lights

Thanks for the comments! Let's just say it took a few hours per minute of each song. And that's with 16 channels, some people have 100+ Anyways, I got my last 2 videos uploaded. The first is the intro that basically explains a bit about the display, and the second one in the THX intro...

    Animated Christmas Lights

Earlier there was some discussion about syncing Christmas Lights to Music. I am happy to say that this season I got my lights Synced to 3 songs. B) I use a 16 Channel Light-o-Rama controller connected to my HA computer to run the show, and an FM transmitter to broadcast the audio to people's...

    Modules on a Radio?

I have to turn the radios off, because the transmitter I have, Belikin TuneCast II, will turn off after a minute of inactivity, and the radios would just receive static as the signal. Do you think Insteon for the radios is worth the extra $$$, or should I stick with X10 for these?

    Modules on a Radio?

I picked up a few $14 radios at Wal-Mart for my whole house audio project. I have an FM transmitter hooked up to HAL, so the audio is broadcasted over a certian frequency (97.5 fm I think I have it set to). I then planned to use some X10 modules I had lying around to turn them on and off when...
