Scoping out an ELK M1G install

That's what I was trying to say but you said it much better. In that scenario, if using an XIN, would you need a relay or would just using an output be okay since it's a momentary closure?

Scoping out an ELK M1G install

Heck .. you could even use the cheap garage door close switch, wire it to a normally open zone and use it to notify the Elk of a push .... then fire the output to close the door.

I forsee a servo mounted laster that automatically points at the moon based on lat/long and the date. I like it! :)

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

Thanks. That was the answer I was looking for. I knew there was a reason but wanted to know what it was. And I felt pretty safe with the multimeter ... wouldn't have connected the valve that way.

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

But in this case the current and voltage are coming from the wall wart, not the M1. All the output would be used for is to complete the circuit. I'm sure what you're saying is right ... I just don't get the why.

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

So in my 2nd scenario, if the valve was actually connected, the current would damage the ouptut expander and/or M1?

Scoping out an ELK M1G install

Are you using the onboard relay or just an output? I'd think just an output would be okay since it's a momentary closure but haven't tried it yet.

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

This is from memory since I'm at work now but here's what I did last night on the bench. Hooked up the Output 1 of the output expander (Output 17 on the Elk) to the 912 and the Wall Wart like in this schematic you helpfuly provided. I didn't have it hooked up to a valve but I just used a...

Scoping out an ELK M1G install

Agreed. I'm thinking the contact closure for the doorbell would be best. PIR based you'd get pics when birds fly by. :)

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

So here's my question. I know this is true as I've been told many times, but I don't know WHY. If the wall wart is providing the power, why can't you just use the output to complete the circuit? I just bench tested this (got my bus issues figured out) and it seems to work. I end up with...

Scoping out an ELK M1G install

There are others much more qualified than I to give you good input but since it's slow I'll give it my best shot. I just went through this myself about a year ago so I have some experience at least. Correct. You need an XIN for each additional 16 zones. 2 wire smokes can't be on the XIN. I...

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

So I just tried the 2nd leg on the bench and I've still got something not quite right. Current Configuration: M1, JP3 installed. DBH, all ports used, terminator in the last port. 8 devices total (3 keypads, 4 zone expanders, 1 XSP) What I tried: Conect another set of 4 wires to the 485...

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

Here's a crazy thought. What if I use the 912's and drive some cheap LED's with the same output/relay as an active zone? I could mount 19 LED's in the front of the can and even have them labeled with the zone. Cheap solution? I really like the idea of a direct hardware way of knowing if a...

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

Does the XOVR have LED's ... it doesn't look like it from photos. In which case if I want LED's I'd need 3 M1RB's and an additional XOVR right? Getting pricey.

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

I have a 2 acre lot. Lot of water use in the summer too. :) I thought about using the Rain8 Net stuff but it was going to be about $300 for the 3 modules. Since I already had some Elk parts on hand was trying to do it cheaper. Plus I just like the rock solid reliability of the M1 hardware...

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

I get you on that ... just trying to use parts I already have. :) I do like the idea of LED indicators though. If I added 2 M1RB's to the XOV would that accomplish what you're saying? And then add an XOVR to get me to 19 (actually 24 in that case). I still have the original Elk Can laying...

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

To be clear, I already have one DBH that is maxed out with XSP's, Keypads, and Zone Expanders. So this woud be adding a 2nd RS-485 line. Just wondering if I will have termination issues doing this.

    Autmoating Sprinklers with M1

Finally getting around to integrating my irrigation system with the M1 / HA system. I'll likely use mcsSprinklers on HomeSeer but use the Elk for hardware control and have some failsafe type of rules so a valve doesn't stay on too long, only one valve at a time, etc. I've done a fair amount of...

    RCS TR-40 "Thermostat not enabled"

BTW, in case anybody is interested it works GREAT with the HSPI Ultra M1 plugin for Homeseer as well. I now have HS devices for Heat Setpoint, Cool Setpoint, Fan Mode, Thermostat Hold, Humidity sensor, Thermostat mode (heat/cool/auto), and Thermostat temparature. Very nice!
