    Overhead Lighting

I believe 4" cans are usually designed more for accent lighting. If you use the 6" cans with R30 bulbs it makes a huge difference. 6" cans 6 feet apart (like gregoryx stated) gives plenty of light in a room even with a 7.5' ceiling. Also with the 6" cans you usually can install larger bulbs...

    Conduit Protection

Yes all AC is in conduit per code, but on the plus side, I've never had a issue in my 40 yr old house of requiring a neutral wire for a switch which wasn't easily solved by simply pulling a white wire through the conduit. :D The Pod

Best Way to Detect Computer Left On?

Another option would be to create a simple visual basic app that monitors the screen saver mode and have it set that if the screen saver has been running for x minutes or x hours, shut down the pc. Then just place the program in the startup or registry startup so everytime the pc is...

    Elk rules not working

Pushing the up arrow did speak the zone status so it was some kind of rule lockup. I shut the panel down for about 5 minutes (turning it off and back on didn't work) and when I started the panel back up the rules started working again. ;) Thanks for everyone's help. The Pod

    Elk rules not working

No I don't think its an issue of not sending to the panel because rules that were already there on the panel and working before are no longer running either such as sending outside temp to keypad display. I'm not sure when they stopped, but I'm suppecting it was about the same time I upgraded...

    Elk rules not working

Spanky, Thanks, I'll try that, but as I stated, its not just voices its all the rules themselves that are not working. WHENEVER Every 5 seconds TURN OUPTUT(10) on for 1 Sec doesn't work either. None of the rules execute. I only created that simple voice rule to test if I could get the rules...

    Elk rules not working

I just started creating rules on my Elk and noticed that they are not working. I know when I first installed the Elk months ago, the rules were working. Since then I've upgraded the ElkRP software but not any firmwares on the panel itself, could this be the issue as to why my rules are not...

    Automating Ceiling Fans

There is power in numbers. I've contacted both Hampton Bay and Hunter fans sales asking that they look at developing controls for their fans using HA protocols and the responses I got was it would be too expensive that no one would purchase it. They already make RF based remotes (selling for...

    Automate a printer?

Electron, That's an excelent idea, but the code I provided for Karen is for a file not a URL. I do have a small application I wrote that does load and print HTML webpages that I use at work. I'll have to clean up the code a bit, but then I would be able to create a ASP page to include a...

    Automate a printer?

OK Karen, I thought you just wanted a standard windows "print test page". This should give you what you are looking for. Create a document (I used wordpad to create c:\test.rtf) and save it to your computer. You then need to create a .NET script in your HomeSeer script folder with the...

Create a scheduled windows task like this: rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /n "printer name" /k rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /n "HP 6180 photo all-in-one" /k Or you can create an event in HS to execute this command line: &hs.launch "c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe"...

    Bulbs

But be careful. Dimmable Fluorescents are designed to be dimmed with resistive style dimmers. Every HA dimmer I've seen uses a Triac style dimmer. Quoted from the Smarthome dimmable Fluorescent bulb page: The Pod

    new project - thermostat

I've got both of my RCS TR16's connected to my Elk M1G with the Elk M1XSP board and love it. I can check the temps of both thermostats from the Elk Keypad. Simple rules to adjust temps when arm away mode is activated, and adjust the temps back when I get home and disarm the panel. :P...

    Newbie... catching the Z-Wave

Welcome to Cocoontech, Assuming the products you bought from Lowes are the Intermatic HomeSettings: The wall switch is a dimmer and does not do 3-way. I have been told from Intermatic that they expect to have 3-way, relay and toggle style switches out first quarter next year. (if you have ACT...

    don't know what's wrong with me :)

Usually I've had very good luck with X-10 when keeping it simple (only automating 1-3 lights). Over the past 5 years I've set up 4 people with the ActiveHome starter kits and 1-3 modules just to automate one or two simple tasks like outside lighting or garage lights. After downloading the...

    don't know what's wrong with me :)

The $72 isn't for the CIM, it is for the Elk-M1XSP. Unless you're telling us you can connect the CIM to the Elk M1G without this additional Elk product. The X-10 (TW523/PSC05) interface plugs right into the main Elk panel. No additional Elk addon products needed. And I will also agree with...
