Once in a while, someone on the forums will mention how you can connect to your network at home using SSH and a DD-WRT based router. The reasons this is a popular choice is because it is fairly simple to configure, very secure, and it even works on smartphones (which is how I use it). video321 was kind enough to create a tutorial explaining how to configure your router and client so you too can connect to your home network from a remote location.
Why should you bother switching from simple port forwarding to this SSH method? Because with simple port forwarding, you are allowing anyone to connect to your services (such as Elk M1, CQC/HomeSeer/..., etc.), and while there is usually some form of authentication involved, it's just a bad idea to expose your important systems like this.
