Blackberry?

I am really new to home automation etc. I am building a house this summer and I really want to add some home automation. Lights, security, sound etc. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the choices and the task of piecing everything together.

I am a crackberry addict and ideally I would like an interface that I can control and monitor various parts of the system through the Internet via my blackberry. Does anyone offer anything like this for the blackberry or am I going to have to design my own.

Thanks

Welcome to CocoonTech!

There are many options depending on what your back end system will be. If it is a SW or HW system that has a web interface, you should be able to browse to that from your BB and control things. The Elk M1 also has a telephone remote control option so you could certainly control things via that. To step up to something fancier you need a device that can run CE so you could use a CE viewer for stuff like CQC.

The M1 would be the easiest from the standpoint of setup - all you need is the Elk and associated stuff, the negative is it is not a visual control, it works more like a VRU.

Something with a web interface, like Homeseer or pretty much any of the other systems is ok if you can run a compatible browser on the BB. It's a little more difficult to setup and get working, but will be a little easier to use assuming you setup some decent looking web pages.

Another option is a wireless system from AT&T called remote monitoring, but it requires a Cingular/AT&T plan and a monthly fee - but its an option.

Thanks for the welcome. That's not quite what I am looking for but it's better then nothing.

I really don't understand all the differences between everything yet. I wish someone could just say 'here is what you need to get started' but of course every application is different.

I am surprised that with how popular the blackberry is that no one has made software to 'sync' with your home.

With homeseer can you design the web pages that control your system? That might work well especially if you can make it text based instead of pictures.

Ideally I was hoping for something that you could use almost like a remote. Click on an icon on your BB and you are instantly linked to the various controls of your home.

I have an HVPro and have the free webserver plugin enabled. I was EASILY able to setup control of security, hvac, lights, and other status. I had to dork around for about an hour to get buttons and fonts looking good on the Curve screen. It is straight HTML with nothing fancy but it does the job no sweat.

SnapLink Mobile will only run on Windows Mobile 5.0 or later. Blackberries (unless they have WM5.0) or Palm OS devices cannot run SnapLink Mobile.

It’s possible to control / monitor any operational function of the Adaptive Home Logic home automation application using plain language text from your mobile phone or device using a (free-to-download) Java telnet client to communicate with the program’s built-in server.

I’ve done this using a Samsung mobile phone and it work very well. I’ve also got a BB so I will try it! All necessary instructions are within the program’s help file.

Hope this helps,
Robin
