I really don't like the concept of "self service" myself. Here in Las Vegas they put in self service checkouts in grocery stores and even a Home Depot (hardware store). It's a PITA. Something never scans correctly or some other problem and a "live" person has to come over to help anyway. I don't know, maybe it's just me... :p
