Camera Power Distribution (12v)

I'm finally finding some time to dedicate to home security & automation again and my first target is an issue I've been experiencing on my cameras. I'm encountering quite a bit of "noise" on many of the feeds, which are horizontal lines and create a wavy look for the picture. It's driving me nuts and I'm not sure exactly where to address the issue.

My first assumption was that I was experiencing an issue with some reused cable from some older cameras, which I had to splice and rewire to get to work. I purchased new cable and hooked up my first camera and while it appears slightly better, I still see lines. Then I recalled I consolodated some of my 12V wall warts into an Elk power distribution unit - (PD9DC12- Link to Example) a while back.

I found that the lines went away for the most part when I went back to using a wall-wart directly. As it stands, I am only using 4 cameras currently on the distribution, so it's not really overloaded. Any ideas on a power distribution solution for 10+ cameras that wouldn't degrade the picture. Would a computer power supply deliver the correct power to the cameras on the 12V feeds?

I realize this has been discussed a bit in other topics, however I believe it mainly revolved around Skibum's massive power supply. Thanks in advance for any ideas. Although I'm currently playing around with the feeds and they may be up and down, you can see examples at my website's main page. The cameras are on the right hand side.

Hey Stinger

Is your 12 volts running along the Co-ax, or is it a separate feed?
It sounds like the power supply you are using is noisy.

A spare pc power supply will work fine with a few cams.

What current draw do your cameras have exactly? If they are LED types they might exceed the 250ma spec. Of course, I wouldn't think that would be a cause for the noise problem.

The DC Camera Power Distribution Kit conveniently powers up to nine (9) 12 Volt DC cameras. Each camera output is protected with a 250mA auto-resetting PTC to protect any shorted output from disabling the other outputs.

Hey Moosie! How's it going?

Current draw is independant of noise unless you are exceeding the power supplies design specs.

Hey Skiie;

Read my full post my dear.

I was just curious of the total draw when I saw the 250ma spec. ;)

Of course, maybe I should have asked him if he was running HomeSeer 2.0 as well ?!?!?

Also a little curious because that particular power supply is "supposed" to be used with cameras.

I would have to agree. That power supply would be doing well to do one camera (if that). I have a 8 port distribution block kit that runs off of a 4 amp supply that I have had pretty good luck with. It has 1 amp fuses for each camera power and 8 crimp-on CCTV power cables too. It's a nice step between the little plug shown and a full wired box. I've been selling them for $50 to installers if you need an option.

Your selling the distribution block, cables, and four amp power supply for $50? That sounds like an excellent deal. Do you have any pics of the setup?

I sell them to installers for that price (retail for $89). They don't seem like much but they work really great when you don't want to put in a full wired box. Here's what they look like packaged:

wow, that's a pretty good price then! Do you have a link to a page which shows all the specifications? Thanks!

Sorry, I don't have a link to the specs. The specs I have are pretty much listed above. What other information were you looking for?
