Copy Elk rules to a text file?

Is there a way to copy a list of Elk rules as text to a file, for things like pasting them in a forum post or whatever?

I use Adobe Acrobat (not the reader) to do it, but there are other options.

You first use Print Setup to configure the default printer to your favorite PDF writer (Acrobat or 3rd party). Then you print your configuration to a PDF file, open it in Acrobat and using the text selection tool copy the desired text from the report. Using this technique you can copy your whole configuration. Here is a piece of one of my rules:

13 WHENEVER Water Heater (Task 1) IS ACTIVATED
AND Water Heater (Out 3) STATE IS OFF
AND LadderCycle Flag (Out 30) STATE IS OFF
THEN TURN Water Heater (Out 3) ON FOR Heat Timer 1 (Cust Set 1)
THEN SET Heater Today (Counter 4) TO 1
THEN ANNOUNCE Miscellaneous 5 (vm243)
THEN ANNOUNCE Water Heater (Out 3)
THEN ANNOUNCE On (vm310)

This is a way to do it but it is kind of klugy.

With the account open in RP, select "print" from the main toolbar.
Select "this account" and select "preview", not "print".
Select rules only.
Then in the upper left corner, select export (an envelope looking icon).
Select "text" format, and to "application".
It will then open Wordpad and paste the rules to there.

You can then select, copy and paste at will...just like this:

1 WHENEVER F4 KEY ON ANY KEYPAD ACTIVATES
THEN TOGGLE F4 button light (Out 24)
2 WHENEVER F4 button light (Out 24) STATE IS TURNED ON
THEN DISABLE NON-ALARM VOICE MESSAGES
3 WHENEVER F4 button light (Out 24) STATE IS TURNED OFF
THEN ENABLE NON-ALARM VOICE MESSAGES
THEN ANNOUNCE Miscellaneous 5 (vm243)
4 WHENEVER F4 button light (Out 24) STATE IS TURNED ON
THEN DISPLAY "Silent Mode^M" IN Area1
5 WHENEVER F4 button light (Out 24) STATE IS TURNED OFF
THEN CLEAR PREVIOUSLY DISPLAYED MESSAGES

It is high on my wish list also, along with a check box for each Rule to disable it without erasing it. Embedded comments are coming also.

I beat up on the ELKRP Guru each day about this whether he needs it or not!!!

Good job, we need both of those.

If you need some help, I can bring my bat.

Along those lines please continue to use the wet noodle on him regarding rules organization! That's the really huge one IMHO. I spoke to you and Chris about it at EHX. Some ideas were either to A: Have Tabs that you can create and label such as 'Security', 'Irrigation', 'Lighting', etc so you can logically break down the rules into small groups and have the ability to move rules from tab to tab. Idea B along the same lines would be to use your current tree paradigm. Just allow nested branches under the Rules limb. Have the ability to create the same kinds of groups but instead of tabs they would show under rules with the + and - to open and close that section with the rules under each.

Something like that will go a very long way to improving the usability of RP.

I only have a few dozen rules and it is very difficult to find what I need and keep it organized, I can only imagine those with more.

Thanks for listening and staying on top of this!

I see that you can now disable a rule and use comments, but can you copy a rule's text to the clipboard yet?
