Someone has posted a great instructable on how to control a light/appliance with your IR remote, without using any software or HA controllers. It's a small project, but still pretty cool. You can check it out by going to the link posted below.

Great concept, except I was looking around my living room and I do not have a single electrical outlet that is not behind a chair or sofa.

In my case RF would be a better solution.
