Elk M1 seizing phone line

Just installed the Elk M1 this weekend and connected the phone line to an existing phone outlet that was previously used by my old system. Whenever I plug in the phone jack the dial tone disappears from the house phone line.

Is it just a simple issue of mixed up tip/ring wires?

How is it hooked up? What is the old phone outlet - is it an RJ31X? How is that jack wired into the house, is it just a jack in a daisy chain, is it straight from the demarc? Hard to say what the problem is without some detail...

I don't believe the tip/ring polarity is of any concern in your installation.

If you look at the Elk schematic, it details how to connect the telephone line. The main drop should go to the M1G and then you connect the cable that feeds the house phones to the same location (different terminals) in the RJ jack. This is so the panel can sieze the line to make a call. You cannot just plug the M1G into a phone jack like a telephone or answering machine.

carry 15+1,

You can just put the telephone connection of your alarm system on an extension line (my GE Caddx NX8e had to be done that way), but as you indicate you will not have head of the line and an intruder can sieze the line by taking an extension phone off the hook.

Many of us live in townhomes or condos where we cannot get to the head of the line and have to live with the alarm system telephone interface hooked up as an extension.

Also, many townhome or condos have the telephone junction boxes out where anyone can get to them and cut your phone wires even if you can get to the head of the line inside your townhome or condo.

Just a thought.
