Here is a Question!

Elk M1G and existing Hal 2000. Looking for any pro's & con's and what the 2 can or can't do together. All comments welcome.

Well, I believe there is a serial only M1 driver for HAL, so you should be able to access M1 functions from HAL. So you could do TTS or other stuff that the Elk either can't or doesn't do well. Since HAL doesn't have an interface designer like CQC or ML you can't really build touch screen interfaces in HAL to interface with the M1. You should be able to get the same functionality as you would with a Homeseer-Elk or AnythingWithADriver-Elk system. You should be able to take advantage of HAL's VR and use it to do things in the Elk like arm and disarm, etc. Well, you probably don't want to disarm by voice, but you get the idea.

Steve is right. The thing to keep in mind is that if connect the HAL to the Elk with the serial connection (only way currently supported by HAL), you will be unable to connect an Elk Web interface to the M! because that main serial connection will be taken.

I beleive HAL has limited support for the Elk M1 at this time. Security only, maybe inputs, but no X10 pass thru or thermostat support. Ask the HAL guys to find out for sure: www.automatedliving.com

alarmguy,
Since MainLobby 3 supports both the ELK M1 AND HAL, you could use MainLobby as the cohesive glue. Works very well together. And, of course you also gain the user interface design / run software that allows for nice touchscreen interaction with HAL and ELK.

That gives me another idea. Since folks are having trouble with Homeseer VR on the way2call modem and since MainLobby supports HS and HAL... Could MainLobby act as a bridge to allow HAL to be used as a VR over telephone interface for HS?

Mike, well, actually, it probably would work. Would take a fair amount of configuration as a "best of breed" approach, but technically I think it's doable.
