Yes, he got it working and has made a note of the wiring config. Now he just needs to wire it into the car PC.

Yep, thanks Squintz! Do you think this unit will do ok if I use power from the PS2 port? It is only 5V, supposedly within limits, but the recommended voltage is 12, what do you guys think, it would allow me to use external connectors versus having to wire more stuff.

yeah, but that means I have to mount the lead outside the case so I can connect my gps, just exploring my options, but looks like I am going that way.

Can't you mount a female DE9 in the case itself (to mate with your gps receiver cable)? That way you keep the serial port and power wiring entirely within the case.

Edit: Sorry, that should be male jack in the case, right? I think the end of the cable was female.

I think that is how I would do it, if everything was in 1 cable from the unit. I was not aware that power was in this cable as well.

This is what the wiring is like now:

A little messy but you can see what I have to do. Mounting a customized db9 male connector on the case , connected directly to the com port header might be another way of keeping everything nicely inside. The GPS has 1 cable for both power and data, as shown in the pic.

Electron, What u doin with your CarPC? What screen? What case? what CPU? what car? what software? What powersupply strategy?

I have all the pieces in various states on mine, just gotta find a few hours to install it all. The StarVision monitor is still in pieces on my study floor waiting to be installed in the DIN hideaway chassis. The Shuttle PC has been my XMLobby server and that's about it. I will use a 12 > 110 volt Inverter until I see a Shuttle 12v powersupply that works better.

Dan,
I have obviously missed out on a lot of this conversation but I thought you were going to use a USB GPS?

OK, after looking at those pictures you posted I'm intrigued. What make of PC is that? This is going in your car right? How will you power a 110v PC in your car, by using a power converter? Where do you plan on mounting your monitor?

BTW... when i use my laptop it has to be pluged into and inverter when i plug the GPS to the PS2 port. I am thinking that it doesnt supply enough current when running from the laptop battery. This shouldnt be a problem for you but if others see this thread and buy a garmin GPS35 they may want to know that tid bit of info
