PCworld has a great article about HomePlug AV, a newer version of the older HomePlug protocol, which will be supporting speeds up to 200megabit per second, and will be supported by many new devices. The new protocol is to be ratified sometime in June this year. The article also describes how the HomePlug alliance is working on their own low-power and low-speed powerline protocol, designed with home automation in mind.

Homeplug Av will interfere with Ham Radio operators. There is another AV Powerline standard that has a programmable notch filter that will allows interoperability with the ham operators. It is also at 200 mbps as well. CPEs will begin shipping in May as well.
