How long should ELKRP stay connected?

I'm connecting from ElkRP on my laptop to my M1 via Wifi to an Elk Ethernet adaptor connected to the main comm port of my control. I get "Control disconnected" messages at unpredictable times. While sometimes I can maintain a connection for 30+ minutes, at other times I get disconnected in two or three minutes.

Is this normal behavior? If not, would noise/interference with my WiFi cause this or is it more likely a problem with my M1?

TIA

Mike

Mike,

I have never had a problem disconnecting from rp. Can you connect right back up?

Do you drop your internet connection if you are surfing the web?

Yes. I connect successfully to the M1 on a retry.

I do not have any issues with internet connectivity, Remote desktop into other PCs in the house, or file sharing on other pcs in the house.

If it helps, I've had mine connected overnight without problems. The connection was over wired ethernet, not wireless.

I have the exact same problem. I figured it was a "feature" of the wireless connection.

I guess Opie has it... it's a undoccumented feature of your wireless setup.... LOL I am able to stay connected no problem (wireless even) I just disconnected from it after 45 min. And this morning I left it connected for an hour.

I'll give it a try via hardwired ethernet too see if I get different results.

PlanoMike,

I have the Netgear WGR614 and it is a few years old, If you have the same maybe we can narrow it down to a brand of wireless. Maybe MustangCoupe will share his secret wireless weapon. B)

I spoke with Elk Tech support earlier today and they thought Wifi was the culprit as well. I suspect it is not so much a matter of brand of router as it is noise in one's environment. I suspect that the ElkRP software over RS232 was no designed for occasional breaks in the connection as might occur with wireless.

Check the router logs, if it has that feature. I found a Linksys firewall router doing the same thing. One thing that helped was turning of uPnP, but it was still not stable at certain times.

I wound up buying a dlink to replace it. Different case here, but start searching and you may find others with that router having similar issues.

Possibility: If your firmware is not up to date, maybe the issue was fixed...

Well after 3.5 hours connected via hardwire I agree the wireless is the culprit. For me it doesn't really drop enough to be a big problem but it is nice to know why.

I use a motorola WR850G router and have a intergrated intel proset/wireless card in my laptop.

The motolola router is baised on the broadcom chipset that the linksys wrt54g are also built using. And Mike had problems with a linksys....

I have great coverage, but found the laptop card made a diffrence... I originally had problems in the same seat I am in now with an pcmcia wifi card... windows says my connection is excellent (5 bars)
