So I took a lightning strike at my house on the weekend and various things are working and not working. My network is down. Rounter and switch down. Can someone tell me if I want to plug a laptop running snap link directly into the Omni port? Do you do that with a regular network cable or with crossover cable directly from the omni port to a laptop running SnapLink to Test the omni port? THANK YOU!

You can start with a laptop and a crossover cable. Assign an ip to your laptop. ping the ip address of the Omni.
If that is successful move on to running SnapLink.

hi dwalt, thank you.

Can u inform the ignorant what the ping command syntax might look like?

You would not believe the amount of surge protections installed in this house!

I'm certain they all helped it not to be worse...

ping -t "ip address of Omni" from the command line
make sure the ip address you assign the laptop is on the same subnet as the Omni
what is the state of the 2 leds to the left of the network connector on the Omni?

running around fixing all sorts of damage!

Omni up and running via keypads.

I follow the syntax thank you.

I substituted and OLD blue & black linksys router for the fried asus router and fried 16 port switch to get some limited network "up"

When i get to the panel will update.

The two cams that were down are OK! Found a POE switch burned out, getting a new one in warranty -- WIN!

The old temporary Linksys router took it's sweet time reaching out for new DNS info! That issue essentially fixed itself -- eventually!

A tech guru I know says surge protection is more for from the utility companies power lines, NOT a mega lightning strike?

Multiple layers of power line surge protection.

TV signal cables surge protected.

No cable to ethernet surge protection, my limited understanding is the 75 ohm cable will get limited data throughput to the modem / ethernet if the cable to the modem (75ohm) has surge protection installed.

Old war story, before telephone surge was installed, the old Omni II (no E) panel smoked the telephone interface on the Omni II, you could see the board was black at the telephone area. And yes, the POTS was properly grounded on the wall, but the demark was installed outside the house. That's why I prefer the demark INSIDE the house! :)
