M1 & Weigand Reader

Can a Weigand Reader, like this one, be connected directly to an M1 or does it have to be connected to a keypad?

Any 26 bit Weigand device must connect to a keypad or the soon to be released M1KAM
Access Module.

We use that exact reader for our back door. It's connected to the Elk keypad that is located inside of that door.
