Does Gateway still have the bad reputation of building proprietary computers that are only upgradeable by them?

You mean like Dell?

I believe you can actually fry a dell if you hook an industry standard power supply to it (this was the case a little while back) so dont think of motherboard upgrades...

Then again, if you can build your own, are you buying a Dell/Gateway anyway (except for bargains of course)?
