New Car PC (Take 2)

Ok, here I go again! I had started to build a CarPC and was about halfway done when the car was stolen. I got it back a couple weeks later, but minus the Touchscreen, GPS receiver, Power Inverter, Noise canceling Mic, Stereo, Omnifi Wireless network fo home and Car "syncing". (Thank GOD I brought the laptop that I was using for the initial test bed in the night before at least!

So here I go again trying to do it all over. The first try was a trial run, and I learned a lot in the Cocoon chatsm and in the first thread.

So Far here is what I have put together:

- HP Mini PC with DVD reader (Thanks to BSR for finding such a GREAT DEAL on a small PC! It is small, and uses little power as the drives and power supply are the same as a laptop computer.

- A 7" Motorized Touch Screen. This is by far the best price I have seen on a motorized touchscreen! There are hundreds of motorized screens, but few touchscreens. Luckily my car has a double din, I have a single din stereo in one now, and will put the touchscreen above it in the 2nd slot.

- I have iGuidance on order, and it should be here in a few days (Thanks for the tip Electron).

- 500 Watt Power inverter (also in the mail)

- Road Runner CarPC Software

- USB BlueTooth Dongle

I still have to get another microphone, and a USB GPS receiver as far as hardware goes.

I am wanting to use my bluetooth phone in conjunction with the CarPC. This is all new to me, and I am sure it is gonna take a lot of research and tweaking to get it all to work.

Is there anything else I should be concerned about, or that I am missing here? If you are going to say an alarm system, got that covered  2 days after I bought my "new to me" car (1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse), I had a Viper alarm installed with a 7000ft range 2way pager, ignition kill ect. I also installed another hidden switch that will, even if the alarm is bypassed, keep the car from starting.

I will update this thread with progress and photo's as to hopefully give some insight to others that may be going to tackle something like this.

That does look like a really nice screen (even has a TV tuner!), nice catch! Looks like it has some good reviews on mp3car.com, check out this thread:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread...ighlight=SP-716

Also, someone mentioned on page 2 of that thread that you can get it directly from the manufacture for $350 + shipping, but I didn't see too many people talk about that deal, they all seem to get it from the same ebay seller you are dealing with.

I miss my CarPC

Looks nice... I am not good with reading specsso i cant comment on that but from a wow effect I think its cool. Just wish I had the money to do something similar.

the specs look good, looks like this is based on a Liliput LCD, which is pretty popular in the CarPC world. Can't beat the price, it's definitely something I will consider for my next CarPC.

That's over a mile, what do you use that for.

It is a pager to let you know if your alarm has gone off. If you were a mile away, I guess theres not much you could do though  On another note, the "7000 ft range" was probably measured in the Salt Lake Flats of Utah on a perfectly clear day holding the remote over your head hehehehe. Makes it quite strong enough to reach when I am out shopping or in the house. Shopping is the key here, my car was stolen at 12:30 PM from a buys supermarket in a very nice area. You never know....

As for the screen, it does seem like it's gonna be nice! I like the fact that it's motorized! "Out of sight... out of mind". It just looks like a cheapie stereo with a digital clock if someone was to case the car and look in to see what's there.

Well, I was doing my daily routine of checking out Digg.com and found a REALLY good CarPC article! Describes all sorts of options, configurations, front ends, layout you name it. If you are looking to build a CarPC, this is a great place to start!

You Can check it out here.

Makes perfect sense. I've been doing too much whole house paging/audio research so didn't stop to think that it would be good to know your alarm is going off (and the range threw me off too).

Well this project is just about complete! Took it for a road test to a friend of mine's house in Miami today. The I-Guidance software used his address from Outlook, a VERY kewl feature! Thanks to the chat the other night and Electron for recommending this software to me.

I have attached a few pictures here, as I know everyone on this board loves to look at project pics... I know I do!

Here are some spec's on the CarPC: (Installed in a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse)

- The Mini HP PC that BSR found here.

- 200 gig external USB Hard Drive (- Just over 11,000 MP3's on the Hard drive and about 60 music video's, and a few DVD rip's).

- 600 Watt (800 Peak Power) DC to AC inverter

- In Dash motorized touchscreen

- Delorme USB GPS receiver

- Wireless Keyboard and mouse

- Multi function card reader in the glove compartment for dumping photo's from my digital camera when i'm on the go.

- The audio out goes into the AUX on my car stereo. The nice feature of this is if you are listening to the tuner on the radio, it will mix the audio from the PC. Great for the verbal GPS instructions. (You can switch the stereo to AUX and it will only play the PC's audio then)

Thats about it... Pictures to follow in the next few posts......
