BBuy and Newegg will soon be selling a new low cost Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) for $299

The Eee PC features a 7" display (800x480), 10/100 NIC, 56k modem, WiFi, 256MB to 1GB of DDR2 memory and solid-state memory for storage (2GB to 8GB). To keep prices low, the device runs a Linux-based operating system although it is compatible with Windows XP.

Call it what you will but at $299 for a full blown, if not underpowered, computer isn't too shabby. Anybody ever tried one of those USB to VGA adapters?

And it looks like they're talking about releasing a version with Windows XP in Asia at the end of the year. Neat.

This is not a terrible idea since it runs everything you would ever want as a UI:

MainLobby, HSTouch, Elk RM, Homerunner, Homeseer Speaker App, XLobby, etc. etc.

Good screen, tabletop (requirement for me), can have drive spin down when not in use for quieter operation, built in speakers...

Only real issues: looks, fan noise, Vista (Must be something similiar with XP as the OS?).

Intel D201GLY "Little Valley"


Can be had for ~$70 US!

So add in some RAM and a CF card and you are good to go for a thing client. Looks as though it could easily be mounted in an alarm can.

Also could make for a decent set top box for a media server client assuming you can find hardware support on a PCI display adapter.


I have NO CLUE why they used an SiS chipset, that part sucks! Otherwise I would start building micro full function DVRs with them.

Thats a bunch of power in a PC thats only 6" square.

Well, it doesn't look like it takes an ATX power supply, so I guess I can't recommend the picoPSU.

But silent pc review is a great place to research tiny, cheap, and energy conserving (and thus quiet) small PC's.

Conclusion
The D201GLY is a rather green motherboard, consuming an average of only 25watts. The board power consumption power levels are rather close to the VIA C7 implementations, which are well known for low power consumptions. Our CPU benchmark delivers the same message: the Intel CPU perform better than VIA-EX CPU.

This system can be powered by the picoPSU-120 with a 60watt AC adapter . For applications where input voltage cannot be a regulated 12V source (example: car batteries, automotive applications), the M2-ATX Automotive power supply will be a good candidate. NOTE: Do not use M1-ATX as the D201GLY draws V(core) power from the 12V rail, therefore the M1-ATX might not work well despite the fact that it is a 90watt PSU.
