My current system with an Axim X30:

Software:
iGuidance for roads
Outdoor Navigator for topos

Hardware:
Globalsat BT-338 (bluetooth GPS receiver)

I second the recommendatoin for www.buygpsnow.com .

The GPS forum at www.aximsite.com has a lot of good information and most of it is not Axim-specific.

I can recommend iGuidance for sure! The bonus is it wil install on a PC as well as a PDA. When it arrived, I installed it on my CarPC, then installed it on my PDA, both work flawlessly. Sorta like a 2-4-1 deal :p

iGuidance is actually 4-for-1--you get USA & Canada maps for both PC & Pocket PC. When choosing a gps, make sure it has the SIRF III chipset.

Thanks all!

Looks like most rcvrs are $100 with the s/w also being $100. I thought I saw a Garmin bundle for $129 way back when?

Any comments on only being able to have one map loaded at a time?

That would probably depend on the software and map. What are you referring to?

In iGuidance, you "build" the map that is loaded into the PDA. You either select a group of states or you select a location and a radius (i.e., everything within a 100 mile radius of Cincinnati (which happens to be what I have loaded now)).

In the previous version of the software, you could select states at either end of a trip - it always had major roads between the ends. In the latest version, you need to select every state in between - leading to a lot more map data on the PDA for a long trip.

By the way, does your ipaq have bluetooth?

The forums I've trolled through mention loading states and I've seen iGuidance author's comments on only being able to have one map loaded at one time.

Yes, my iPaq has Bluetooth. That seems the way to go.

There are a few devices with the SIRF III chipset (looks like ~$80 - $180).

I'm not sure what you mean by one map at a time. in Iguidance, when you select the statesm it shows you the memorty it will take total, and you can add/remove states at will. For instance if I were to go from West Palm Beach to Tennessee, it would be around 240 Meg (As shown in the attached picture).

I did not go bluetooth, but should have. That would free up the CompactFlash slot on my Toshiba E103 PPC. As it is now, I can only have a SD card in the PPC when the GPS is inserted.

When you build maps (combining states) for iGuidance, it can only use one of these maps (of multiple states) at a time.

However, you can have more than one map in your PDA. The map data is stored in a directory called Maps. You can have multiple directories of maps on the PDA - you just need to rename the ones you are not using to something else. For example, I may have a directory with the map around home and another for when I'm traveling. The one I currently want to use is named Maps, the other one is named to tell me what it contains (e.g., Maps-NJ-NY-VT). When I need to use the other maps, I shut down iGuidance and change names (Maps -> Maps-Home, Maps-NJ-NY-VT -> Maps). This way I can have multiple maps in the PDA without needing to regenerate them all the time. I also save them on my PC this way so that I can just copy them to the PDA.

Tony,

I use PocketMap Navigator for the software and a Pharos Bluetooth GPS coupled to my Ipaq 2755.

Ive been very happy with both so far.

Dave.
