Good morning folks,

Can you please name security monitoring companies that supports ELK's signal aside from NextAlarm?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :o

Thanks.

Neil

Are you talking about internet based monitoring? If not, almost every alarm monitoring company should support the Elk M1.

Hi Dan,

Here are my plans. I would like to totally get rid of my Comcast telephone so I can save $45/month. I bought Magicjack for our voice line and I am very happy with it. I would like to change the way my ELK sends signal. I would like to do it similar to NextAlarm's ABN.

Who are some great companies out there that does internet based monitoring?

Thanks!

I don't think there are any DIY friendly monitoring companies that support the M1 XEP using true TCP/IP monitoring. You can use your MagicJack VOIP line instead of your Comcast land line with NextAlarm, if MagicJack works and is reliable enough for you. But since MagicJack requires a PC, I would not consider it reliable for security. Why not just get NextAlarm and an ABN?

I tried it with magicjack and it doesn't work. The reason I bought magicjack was really for voice only and to replace comcast voice line.

I was disappointed with NextAlarm last week. I convinced a friend last year to try Nextalarm and he like it. He's with NextAlarm now. He was also able to get his own device to work with NextAlarm. The device is PAP2T-NA. NextAlarm gave him some instructions such as upgrading firmware. He's so lucky because he got the device really cheap. This was last year.

So I contacted NextAlarm so I can do the same thing as well. However, they're not allowing me to provide the device. They sent me a link where I can purchase the device. I don't want to spend $115-$130 just for that device if the other device will work as well. I really want to save money. Saving $60 means so much to me especially our situation.

They are not making a good impression with me either.

I've been waiting for their technical support to send me technical specs on their ABN adapter -- dimensions, power requirements, environmental limits, connection info, mounting options, etc. Have received nothing.

Does anybody have that information handy?

Historically, NextAlarm has allowed people to use their own device/router (I do). But you should not expect tech support from NextAlarm if you aren't purchasing their ABN device. Using VOIP for alarm data is totally YMMV, it works well for some and not all all for others. If NextAlarm refuses to let you use your own device, simply tell NextAlarm that you have a regular line and don't need a device, but realize you are totally on your own for support and responsibility.

I think there is at least one user here who uses an ABN, sorry, I don't remember who it is. I think most here use their own device.

Are you waiting on a reply from NextAlarm or from the HomeTechnology store? NextAlarm does have a reputation for being slow to reply to non-customers, but very responsive to customers. HomeTechnology store may be more responsive.

I believe that NextAlarm is still using a modified Linksys PAP2, so I doubt that the NA modifications would change any of the core specs you are looking for. Maybe you could get what you need from Linksys web pages?

Great leads, got the specs on the PAP2 from Linksys, thank you Wayne.

Yes I was waiting for NextAlarm and not HomeTechnology store.

I use the M1G with ABN and I'm happy with it... Having the special firmware I think is important for dependability issues. I don't think their quite as open to other solutions as they were because of liability and performance / connectivity issues. Using ABN also allows you to remotely access your system (assuming it has that capability) on that separate "line" by dialing a central number and then your system id and password... Abn is also faster than plain dialup.

Right, these are value-added functions even if you have a capable phone connection. I have Cablevision phone service and they claim throughout their collateral material to support "alarm systems and fax machines" (meaning essentially that they will carry QAM). I think there is a high probability that it (digital over POTS via CATV) would work and would be reliable. But I am still inclined to go ABN instead.

I have ELK,comcast,vonage,NextAlarm/MyAlarm. This is a new install this past week. Took a couple of days to work out the communications. Very helpful advise and disclaimers from NextAlarm. Even better help and no disclaimers from cocoontek.com chat and forums.

DIY is just that. Putting the little pieces together and understanding that "Go look here" contains both insight and encouragement.

My friend was able to use his ebay bought PAP2T device with NextAlarm. NextAlarm sent him a firmware and also gave him instructions how to upload. However, that was early last year.

Anyways, I went ahead and ordered the $115 ABN from NextAlarm. I think this is a good deal since they mentioned that replacements are free as long as it's being monitored by NextAlarm. There is also 3 free months monitoring.

JackI, what is MyAlarm?

Alarm monitoring is local/state licensed and NextAlarm uses MyAlarm in 5 states,TN( :) ) is one, to meet licensing requirements. I called NextAlarm and they explained it to me. Your NextAlarm sign up link takes you to the MyAlarm enrollment page to sign up. Business emails are from MyAlarm but EVERYTHING else is NextAlarm, configuration, support, stickers, yard sign, central station number all of it.

I use nextalarm with my Vonnage VOIP adaper, which i think the that exact same Linksys PAP device. I told them i had a regular landline and things have been working fine...

I considered using a landline but not sure now..

since the vonnage/linksys box runs over the internet which comes from comcast via the cabel modem.....will i have signal under a power failure condition?? (assuming my routers, voip, etc...are all on UPS)??

Basically i'm asking if the cable signal will stay on during power failure...i never tested since i never had a UPS before..
