Not sure if anyone could use this but I've seen lots of postings about detecting water. Here is a small and inexpensive kit from Computer Geeks that detects DRY plant soil. Maybe it has some potential for detecting the presence of water?

oh that is cool, pretty much what I was looking for. I assume it's easy to copy this build since it lists the parts?

edit: it looks like you can find them cheaper when searching for "edison plant alarm" on Google. I have seen them as low as $6.
