TV / Audio

For runs under 50ft, has anybody actually determined if RG59 is really needed rather than Rg6QS?

I basically have RG6QS thorughout the houe mainly just for CATV not for component. I decide i want the component output from the server to display on my TV (so i can get a CQC interface screening on the TV). Rather than spend the money on baluns to run component over cat5 i've just running some extra coax. Since RG6QS is all i have in the house this is what i used. It's not connected yet...is this going to work?

I am very interested in this question also. I have alot of RG6 - not that it cost me much - but was bummed when the whole component video and precision cable made its way to my brain......

I ordered a roll of 5 wire component today from adi.. not the cheapest.. but need to get it done tomorrow..

thanks

Since they don't own a lot of DVD, I ripped their collection to the computer and they can choose to watch those DVDs via one of several Sage HD Extenders that are located in the wiring closet (also hooked up to the matrix switch). On the other hand, I do own a lot of DVDs and instead of ripping them all, I have a Sony mega-DVD changer at my house that is hooked up to my system. But either setup would allow you to have 1 main DVD collection that can be viewed from any TV in the house.

So from what your saying - would the following work. Component cable from each tv to media closet. Some sort of switch in the future ( you mention matrix switch) in the basement that would take multiple cable box inputs , DVD input and/or media pc input and send to multiple outputs. All this can be switched to feed any input to any output?

Can I watch different DVD's on different tc's with that setup?

can i control the DVD via the IR remote?

thanks guys

PS - got half my wiring done today - tomorrow will be another long one!! :D

I did a bit more checking....

You will have a hard time terminating a cat6 on a regular RJ45 plug due to the solid plastic core in the middle of a cat6 cable. It looks like they have special cat6 RJ45 plugs to help with this that accomodate the core. I haven't seen/used them myself, but will need to soon.

Has anybody used these? Can they be crimped with the EZRJ45 tool?

If you have only one DVD player, then you could watch the same DVD on different TVs, but obviously would not be able to watch different DVDs at the same time. But if you had either several DVD players, or a way to watch ripped DVDs on several devices (ie two computers hooked up to the switch, or several networked media players, etc) or one of each, etc, then you could watch more than 1 DVD at a time.

As far as controlling the DVD player, matrix switch, etc there are several ways of doing it. You could control most of the equipment with IR if you had a IR repeater system. They are not very expensive or hard to hook up. However, many of us use some sort of automation control software. Some are realitively inexpensive while others are more expensive. So it just depends on your needs. Using automation software usually means that you can get two way control from devices (so you know if the DVD player is on or playing, etc), as well as more flexability in how you interface with the devices. So rather than just an IR remote control, you might have a touch screen, or an mobile phone/iTouch, etc, etc, etc.

Thats accurate - you do need cat 6 ends. but its still RJ45 heads - just cat 6 rated. Can they be crimped with a reg tool - this i am not sure. I will know in a few months tho

thanks

i will come back to the detail of all this again. I have finalised on my wiring plan. I am going with 2 tv equipment locations. One for upstairs and once for down stairs and basement. . I will run 6 cat 6 between the 2 locations , about 6 rg6 and a couple of component cables also.

To each loc - 2 5 wire component , rg 6 and 3 cat 6. I think its more than enough for what i am trying to do

thanks for
