Universal remote for hotel TVs to allow input switching?

Just got back from Cozumel but have had the same issue other places. They give you a limited remote. In this case only the channel and volume and on/off buttons worked. We brought a laptop. The TV had an HDMI input but no way to select it. Talked to IT and they said it wasn't possible, which I took to mean it was against company policy as it was obviously possible with the right settings. Not sure if the remote was limited or the programming in the TV might be limited but thinking I should take a universal remote with me. At one hotel we got them to give us the original TV remote and it worked fine. There was a setting on the TV to allow casting from a phone but never got that to work either. Anyone do the universal remote thing when traveling?

I have always found that the TVs have buttons on the bottom, side, or back to power on/off, change channel, change volume , and to change inputs. Are they now installing TVs without those buttons?

I didn't see any but didn't look closely for them. I have a 20 year old TV here that has buttons but recent TVs seem to lack the buttons. I'm guessing hotel ones don't because it would just be something more that might get set wrong, confuse people, and require staff to help guests with that.

Now always 100% true, but mostly there are companies that design and sell entertainment packages for hotels. The TV's used to be off-the-shelf TV's, but most nowadays are TV's that are built just for hotels, and only the buttons and jacks are added that are required for the purpose the TV is designed for. They also use remotes that only work with these TVs, so stealing the TV or remote won't do you much good, and even if you took both and put them in your house, they wouldn't boot up.

These were Samsung TVs with some non-original remote with some other name on it. It had HDMI inputs that were unused - feed was coaxial cable. Looked pretty standard except for remote. Not saying that's always the case but just what was there at our recent location.

Here's a fairly recent video of how to get Samsung TV out of Hospitality (Hotel) mode:
I need to file that away on my phone.
