well pump for sprinkler water supply

Hello to all cocooners!

I have been using a well pump to provide water for my sprinkler system, the pump is connected to a pump start relay then the controller to the valves, what i would like to do is to remove the pump start relay, and the controller, and have the pump control by my ELK M1G, has anyone done this before?http://www.cocoontech.com/style_images/1/folder_post_icons/icon9.gif

With relays rated appropriately for your loads, the Elk can control almost anything. Can you be more specific?

the pump is a 3/4HP 115/230volts with a maxload 14.8/7.4amps, the pump has a 30 gal pressure tank and a pressure switch the pump can cut-in when ever the tank psi drops to 30psi and cut-out when the pressure reaches 50psi. this setup was working prior to adding the sprinkler system, in which the installer add the pump start relay and the timer.

I have a similar set up (which I haven't gotten around to fooling with yet) but I think I'm going to leave the controller in place and just use the Elk to trigger it. I'll use the outputs to the valves to tell the Elk whats happening. This way I can take advantage of the intelligence built in to the controller to handle timing on the valves, rotation between valves, daily schedules etc without having to program it into the Elk.

If the tank pressure switch controls the pump, why do you need the Elk to control it? I don't have a well, so I don't know much about how these things work in the real world. The sprinkler wells I have seen don't use a pressure tank, the irrigation controller simply runs the pump whenever it turns a sprinkler zone on. The Elk can easily function as your sprinkler controller, the hard part is making it as user friendly for when you want to change things like zone timings.

Is your pump wired for 115 or 230 volt supply? that will determine what type of relay you need and the rating. I like these relays and here is a good source.

I am running my sprinkler system with a well also. I am guessing that the pump start relay is used to prevent the well pump from cycling on and off while the sprinklers are running as this will cause the well pump to fail prematurely. If you remove it, be carefull that each zone is pulling enough water to keep the well pump running the entire time, if not you could burn up the pump. Personally, I would leave it in place. You should be able to still replace the sprinkler controller since the relay probably is controlled via a low voltage line.
