I would have a second layer even with a whole house unit . I have that and occasionally still lose something (DVD player, Cable Box etc) plugged into a secondary protection.
The best way to do this is add a sub panel and make that pure good true sine AVR inverted power, use a different color romex and drop that where you need the good power. This way you don't have to pay big $ for power to devices that don't much matter. Popping a $1 lightbulb isn't the same as browning out (surge protection doesn't help that) your misc servers.
