Since WC uses 10 MBit only. could we use cables with lower diameter, less shielding?

It works in two pairs out of four pairs in the CAT5 cable.
ok so lets connect 1-2, 3-6.
great, that would push the WC, since the existing wireless products do not allow mixed master and slave architectures.
So back to crimping ;-)

Not sure exactly exactly what you are asking, Ethernet is peer-to-peer not master/slave. UTP shielding is pretty unusual on this side of the pond and is actually pretty hard to do effectively. For reasons I don't understand shielded Category rated cabling is common in Europe.

10 and 100 only use two pairs so you can use a cable with only two pair. Since WC8 is only 10Mb/s that speed is supported by Cat3. Here in the US 3-pair Cat3 cable is pretty commonly available for telephone wiring.
