White Cross cemetery question

This past weekend saw a very old cemetery with just white crosses mostly.

There were some flowers next to some of the crosses.

There were a few regular graves there but over 90% of the graves were marked with just white crosses with no markings?

I (and wife) have never seen this before.

Just curious whether anyone has seen this and knows about something like this?

This is a close up view as it was a bit larger that what the camera captured.

The cemetery was behind a church and we happen to catch the white crosses from a main road such that we did a u-turn to look.

Did some more looking.  Goes back to the late 1700's in to the 1800's.  Most of the marked gravestones were from the 1800's to the present.

It was a Canadian Catholic missionary / settlement which were first inhabitants of the area.

Still wondering though about the unmarked crosses which outnumbered the marked stones by a huge percentage.

Thanks Neurorad.

Thinking I will.

Satellite pictures show the cemetery.  It is mostly behind a bunch of trees.  Here is a little section of it.
