Hydrawise

I don't know if this is new or new to me.   Our landscaper just installed this cool new irrigation controller that is wifi enabled and I can access via their app.   It's pretty cool.    Lot's of controller options.   Can delay watering if forecast is for rain.   Very nice.

I just finished installing new irrigation system for very large yard (I wouldn’t do it again). I decided to use new Hunter Hydrawise controller plus the flow sensor. Hopefully, the system will work pretty well.

Good:
Installation is easy
Six months ago, Hunter upgraded the original version with a bigger box that is much easier to wire. I managed to get my unused original Hydrawise swapped for this new version.
Programming using the large screen and Web site is relatively easy.
Supports flow sensor
Support master valve
Supports valve monitoring using milliamp sensor

Bad:
The Android App is clunky.
Large amounts of real-estate are used to show current weather. WeatherBug shows must better information.
The on/off buttons are very small.
Trying to manipulate 8 zones is nearly impossible. There are seperate screens for each zone. It would have been much better to list all the zones on one screen with operation buttons.
The UI is not focused around user design. There’s no easy way to tell the controller to switch over to fall overseeding (water every ~4 hours for five minutes) without going through a lot of programming.

The Android application needs a major redesign with focus on easy on/off/timing of every zone. The Android application doesn’t need any programming functions in my opinion. Trying to program a system from a four-inch screen requires lots of patience.

Since I haven’t used Hydrawise system yet during summer, I don’t know how good grass quality will be. I did decided to go with Hunter MP Rotators, so hopefully water usage will be reduced.

We've had the Hydrawise for a couple of years now. I've given up on the automatic determination of how much water to apply - it always applies way too much. Yes, I can fake it out into not applying so much but the stupid thing should work. I don't like the $400 water bills in the summer. Now I just run the zones manually as needed and am much happier.
