Why do most WiFi thermostats require you to register online?

The Radio Thermostat web site offers a premium version for $30 that offers a link to your smartphone iOS/Android that enables extra features. http://energyhub.myshopify.com/products/premium-package?utm_source=appad&utm_medium=banner&utm_content=radius&utm_campaign=september2012   I didn't bother...

    what to do with chumby

I remember buying and returning a Sony Dash. I really wanted to like the product but I really really hated the setup (Chumby).   The OS had the smell of greed, stupidity and failure. Why they locked you down to their servers and worse yet Sony's, on such a simple device whose main appeal would...

Why do most WiFi thermostats require you to register online?

Well I picked up a Filtrete 3M50 (Radio Thermostat) because its API is available. Great thermostat and I have no problem with their web based setup, plus I have to option to go it alone if need be.

    panStamp - Wireless Arduino-compatible miniatures

Neat product. What's the practical use of those 0-10V outputs on the "Output-board"? Can they be controlled simultaneously (I thought the HW PWM on the AVR had only two channels).

I'm putting together a basic I/O expander and would appreciate any feedback, changes or just your 2c. Supports via 28pin DIP socket ATmega328P (Arduino compatible), PIC18F26J11 or via 26pin header Raspberry Pi PIC ICD programmable via PICKit2/3 header ATmega328P programmable as a "Arduino Pro...

    Arduino & Home Automation

The 20pin MSP430G2X53 looks promising. I've zero experience with the MSP line (I'm a PIC expert Much like an Arduino, it seems the HW serial port is used for the built in? bootloader as shown on this page http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/BYOB Also the I2C is available. It barely has...

Why do most WiFi thermostats require you to register online?

Thanks for the heads up on the Filtrete, the API looks promising.

Why do most WiFi thermostats require you to register online?

I was reading the user manuals for both the Honeywell & Filtrete 3M-50 WiFi thermostats and both require you to use their online resources to enable the thermostat. Worse yet the 3M-50 run from their online server. Why?

    Arduino & Home Automation

A brief look at the PDIP 20 MSP430 options seems like a MCU from 1999. They appears to be lacking any HW UART or I2C options.

    Arduino & Home Automation

I'll look at the TI, the basic requirement for the MPU is: PDIP package, one UART, one I2C, a handful of I/O plus an inexpensive ICP / bootloader. I'll look at the 20pin MSP430 datasheet.

Philips Hue Connected Color LED Bulbs

Since the Hue is ZigBee, it should be possible to design ZigBee light switches.

    Arduino & Home Automation

I'm working on a basic I/O & Serial board that can support either an Arduino, Raspberry Pi or PIC. Brief specs. 4 Relays 4 Opto inputs 1 RS232/422/485 1 XBee socket 1 EEPROM (optional) up to to four units can be expanded via 10pin ribbon cable (I2C). MPU sockets for PDIP ATmega328P &...
