New home construction - newbie, need advice!

Just to circle back, here's what we ended up doing with our house: 1) Temp: We kept the dumb thermostat - since we live in NorCal, we rarely use heating/cooling, so we just handle it manually. 2) AV: AppleTVs everywhere.  Works great, except you need to keep the receiver on :-( 3) Cameras: Went...

    Intelliflow pump RS485 protocol

Looking at tcpdump when my phone (Pentair Water) or laptop (ScreenLogic Connect) connects:   1) The client sends "CONNECTSERVERHOST" (with 0x0d0a0d0a termination) via http. 2) On iPhone clients, a description packet is then sent. 3) Finally, the server gives up the data.   Even sending this via...

    Intelliflow pump RS485 protocol

Any updates?  How is this working for everyone?  We're hopefully going to have our pool finished next week, so I'd love to add pool info to my custom iOS app.  Thanks!

Good point! I'd much rather not run extras; conduit sounds great.

Nice list! I'll take a closer look at OpenRemote, Heyu, and Mister House. Thanks for the suggestion - I'll ask the electrician how much 3 extra Cat6 runs would be to each room ... that'll be a lot of cables coming into our network closet! :-) Thanks, Peter

Oh, and I'd really like iPad & iPhone to be the primary interface, with maybe web as a backup. BTW - Elve looks awesome! Is there a Mac/UNIX equivalent?

Ah I sort of misspoke - by "everything" over IP, I was thinking: lighting, power control, AirPlay (via AppleTV and AirPlay-compatible receivers), cameras, and a thermostat (although it doesn't seem like the Nest is as hackable as I hoped). I just don't want to keep having to switch between apps...

New home construction - newbie, need advice!

Thanks for the responses. Some follow-up questions: 1) My wife really likes the Lutron paddle dimmer switches, with the tiny knob on the side that you slide to dim. She installed a few, and they worked really well. Is there a HA-compatible version of this type of switch? 2) Does anyone make...

Ok, I'll skip the lock automation for now. Any other thoughts?

Oh and audio, I'm thinking of just send it over AirPlay to an airport express, appletv, or AirPlay-receiver. Will probably need speaker wire for in-ceiling and outdoor speakers ...

New home construction - newbie, need advice!

First off, I've never done any home automation before. I do like writing iOS apps. From thinking about my wishes: * everything controlled by iPad app (that I'll write) - don't want to have to constantly switch apps * would like as much going over cat6 ip as possible, instead of separate wires...
