troubleshooting ELK M1G after lightning strike

So I installed my Elk M1 Gold in 2007 in my new home. It has worked well since for security and automation including thermostats/water cut-off/sprinkler system/garage door (mainly simple stuff). I was active on forum back then, but have just let it run on it's own since then and made no big...

    HTD whole home audio

FWIW, I installed the advanced system from HTD (and used their speakers) this summer and couldn't be more pleased with the system and the quick response from the guys there discussion options and configurations.

is the 7 year old up and moving in the morning?

This is my wife's favorite part of our home automation system. Our 7 year old's bedroom is upstairs and she is supposed to be responsible for setting her alarm clock and getting herself up in the morning on school days. These rules use the bedroom motion detector and the one outside the hall...

    ? M1XIN problem

Thanks Spanky, I guess the log was just full as I had a ton of lines that showed input expander 2 problems and it did not go back far enough in the memory of the log to see the earlier events. As noted in post above, the expanders do enroll now that I removed the wire that "commoned up" the two...

    ? M1XIN problem

A follow-up and another question: Killing the power had no effect, the battery backup worked fine. I checked out all the wiring, pulled out all the wires and checked the wires for continuity, rewired the input expander and checked wiring on contacts for continuity with power off, then checked...

    ? M1XIN problem

I had an alarm yesterday on my ELK. Water alarm and motions -- all of which are on my input expander. I called in (don't have internet access for elk yet) and got "alarm memory" but couldn't figure out how to get it to tell me what had caused the alarm. After acknowleging the alarm, Prompt 4...

ELK Thermostats -- could it really be this easy?

Yes, I have 1 M1xsp controlling my upstairs and downstairs seperate units with seperate HAI thermostats. I am very pleased with the looks and function. David

can I use 2 wires of cat 5 to carry power to phone?

I am putting in a base station/answering machine for my wireless phones in the garage entry on the wall. I ran cat 5 to the wall, but didn't think about the power supply. I don't want to run a cord from a wall wart up the wall to the phone mounted on the wall. I could plug in the wall wart...

    Finally finshed wiring (for now)

Amen! We are moving in this week. I have gotten all the security and most of the automation done, have almost finished installing all the audio keypads and speakers, but haven't even started terminating all the Cat5e for phone, Cat 6 for network, and RG6 for tv, plus all the components for...

    relays failing??

Steve, It sure would simplify matters if I can put the relays back at the M1 in the can. Looking at the link to rule of thumb you posted, it says max amperage for power transmission for 24 gauge is 0.577. My wall wart is 24 volts, 1.67 amps. Would that be too much for the cat 5? David

    relays failing??

yes I did follow your instructions and the wiring was fine, no shorts, checked all connections. Maybe when I re-ran the wire I inadvertedly fixed something?? My meter is a cheap one that doesn't measure amperage unfortunately. I like Steve's idea of using the cat 5 as a pull cord to replace...

    relays failing??

Thanks everyone for their input: I would have put in a M1XOVR if I could have gotten one this weekend, but I really needed to fix this without increasing my expenditure, and I needed to reliably water the new sod. I tested a lot this weekend and ran about 35 cycles of the irrigation system...

    M1 dialer timing issue

I wish I would have seen this thread before last night. I have been using elk to dial my cell for several notifications, to ensure things were working like I expected before we move in. I have all the phone accounts disabled except my cell. Haven't ever armed the system except once. Last...

    relays failing??

I am also now confused (even more). Spanky, are you saying that the inline resistor is on the M1 board or in the 912 relay? I am measuring almost 12 volts at the distal end of the cat 5 line at the relays. But as above, I measure 7.4 volts across the - and + of the relay when it is getting...
