Check out Alarm Relay. I've had them for a number of years now and am completely satisfied.

Try a PLM restore. Also, how old is the PLM. There is a know issue with some of the older ones that can cause odd behavior.

It might help to know what 'the controller' is.

Do all speakers sound muddy or just a few? How is the sound with just one speaker connected? How are the speakers wired?  series, parallel? IIRC, the Elk output needs to see about 8 ohms.

I agree with xlirkr above. The ISY integrates very well with the Elk to control Insteon devices. An Elk/ISY system would satisfy all five of your requirements.
