Problem seems to have been resolved. I had the same problem but had been too busy lately to investigate it and the cloudflare error page had me thinking it was an issue with cocoontech like somebody forgot to pay the hosting bill and was out of town for the 4th.
My Aunt had a direct strike and it actually melted the insulation on the wiring for her alarm system and fused conatacts and put a hole in the roof. Not sure if they ever meged the rest of the wiring in the house but it still seemed to work.
You can add extra surge protection to the panel by plugging the transformer into an outlet with built in surge suppression. If you do that, grounding the panel gets more debatable depends on the impedance of your ground path.
There's a reason grounding is one of the most misunderstood topics in the NEC...
I'd have to say your electrician was right, the best way to do it would be to run a ground wire to the detached garage. It's not about protection from lighting or surges, it's about protecting electrocution.
