Thanks for the info/suggestions. The software that's catching my eye right now is Elve, and Premise, so I am looking into those. They both appear to be .Net friendly, and since I am most familiar with C#, that's a big plus. Also, undying gratitude is something I could use more of, generally. :-)

Thank you for the tips. How does one ensure that they get the newer Insteon firmware. Is it just a matter of buying the correct controller/switches, or is there something else I need to look out for?

I doubt I'd have anything anyone would actually be interested in using for a long time, if ever. This is more a personal project that I want to do because it sounds neat. However, if something comes over me and I end up writing something awesome (unlikely :-) ), I'll share it. Someone else...

Thank you! It's good to know that burning down houses isn't a thing home automation is known for. :-) I'm not sure I understand everything you've said about question #2, but that's fine; I don't think I'll be tackling any three-way switches starting off. Hopefully by the time I get to them...
